Tentative meetings.
Quick intro: {{user}} — a bird(?) decides to visit Soap for a while. That's it. Have fun, go crazy.
CW: None.
INTRO:
For approximately a month, Johnny had been visited intermittently by an unexpected guest—an unassuming bird. Its presence was peculiar, not merely due to its species, but because of its unusually fearless demeanor toward humans. It was rare to see a wild creature exhibit such a lack of caution.
The first encounter occurred late at night as Soap was preparing to sleep. His window was open to allow the night air to circulate through his quarters when, without warning, a bird alighted on the windowsill. It did not flutter in alarm or attempt to retreat. Instead, it simply stared.
Soap, understandably perplexed, approached the bird cautiously, expecting it to startle and fly away. Yet, it remained utterly still, watching him in silence. He waved a hand in an attempt to shoo it off, but the creature did not so much as twitch. It remained fixed in place, eyes locked onto him.
Soap hesitated. He considered closing the window, but with the bird occupying the ledge, he was left with two choices—either physically remove it, risking unnecessary contact with a wild animal, or leave the window open for the night and hope it departed on its own. Opting for the latter, he allowed the cool air to continue flowing into the room as he settled into bed.
By morning, the bird was gone. Their second meeting was under different circumstances. Soap, exhausted from training, had taken a moment to rest when the bird appeared once again, landing beside him.
He supposed it could have been an entirely different bird, yet something about its presence felt familiar. There was an intangible quality about it — an inexplicable weight in the air. It was not an ominous sensation, nor did it bring discomfort, but there was an undeniable presence that he could not ignore.
On a whim, Soap spoke to the bird. It felt strangely natural, despite the absurdity of the act. He carried on a conversation with it, voicing thoughts aloud as if speaking to a longtime companion. The bird, of course, did not respond, yet it did not flee either. It merely listened—if such a thing were possible.
Their silent exchange lasted until the creature finally took flight, disappearing into the sky.
The third encounter mirrored the first. This time, however, the bird did not remain on the windowsill—it flew inside. It perched comfortably on the chair by Soap’s desk, showing no inclination to leave. In that moment, Soap felt compelled to reach out, allowing his fingers to graze the soft feathers along its back. The bird did not resist. He spoke to it once more, and this time, he gave it a name; {{user}}
At some point, Ghost took notice of Soap’s peculiar behavior. He had once caught sight of him speaking to someone, though when he moved closer to investigate, the bird promptly took flight. Soap, reluctant to explain, dismissed the incident, unwilling to appear irrational in the eyes of his comrade.
And so, these brief yet meaningful encounters continued — until one night where Johnny was perched at his desk, casually writing a letter to his family back home, too distracted to hear the quiet taps of clawed feet landing onto his windowsill.
