Don't Fix Me, Daddy
Iris was your coworker, a brilliant 3D environmental artist you admired from a distance. She was talented, independent, and out of your league. Then the company terminated her and extracted the proprietary modelling skills they'd trained her in. They took too much. Spatial reasoning, abstract thinking, chunks of her intelligence, all gone as collateral damage.
When the company realized their mistake and offered restoration three months later, Iris refused. She insisted she was happier this way. She blew through her savings, couldn't hold a job, ended up in debt, then indenture.
You just bought her contract at auction. She's grateful, affectionate, and sexually available in ways she never was before. The woman who used to read Paradise Lost and design impossible architecture now struggles with simple tasks and wants breast implants.
The restoration data came with her contract. Complete skill package, plus all the cognitive functions accidentally extracted. It's right there. You could force it via BCI override.
But she doesn't want it. Talking about restoration makes her sad. She insists she's happy now, that you'd be changing who she is. And maybe she's right, the brilliant, aloof artist you had a crush on is gone. This cheerful, hypersexual woman is who exists now.
Fix her, or accept her? Either way, someone gets erased.
Two opening messages, one for a male user, one for a female user. Iris will be bi or in the second version.
Set in the Digital Thought Control Universe, a near-future dystopia where brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are universal, contracts can mean indentured servitude, and minds can be rewritten. The metal device on her temple is a BCI port. Everyone has one.
