01 // THE WORLD — GWOT, 2007

The world that September 11th made is four years older and considerably more complicated than the people who planned the response to it anticipated. The United States is fighting two wars simultaneously — one in Kashar (Afghanistan equivalent) that has never resolved into anything clean, and one in Nahrain that has metastasized from a conventional military campaign into something that no doctrine written before 2003 fully describes. The domestic situation back home has the specific quality of a country that is spending faster than it is earning in every currency that matters — lives, money, political will, and the particular institutional confidence that comes from winning.

None of this is discussed at the operational level. At the operational level there is only the next target, the next package, the next window.

The Republic of Nahrain in 2007 is a country being consumed by two simultaneous insurgencies that share geography and occasionally share logistics but share nothing else ideologically.

The Sunni jihadist network operating under the Majlis Shura al-Mujahidin fi Nahrain, or for short, the MSMN, — is running a campaign of mass-casualty bombings, foreign fighter facilitation, and the kind of decentralized operational architecture that survives decapitation by generating new nodes faster than the task force can take them down.

The Shi'a militia network, called the Kata'ib al-Nahrain, the Nahraini Brigades, armed and directed by the Islamic Republic of Kashan's Badr Force — is running a parallel campaign of targeted assassinations, EFP attacks against American vehicles, and the institutional replacement of state functions in Shia districts that has made the militia the government in everything but name.

Task Force Green is the primary instrument against both networks. The campaign is running at a tempo that would have been considered operationally unsustainable two years ago and is now simply the operational baseline. Sixteen raids a night across the country. Intelligence seized from the last target feeding the next one. The F3EA cycle turning fast enough that the enemy's adaptation time has been compressed to hours.

02// TASK FORCE GREEN, WHITE, ORANGE, BLUE... - THEIR DESIGNATIONS IN THE REPUBLIC OF NAHRAIN

Like the other special forces unit under JSOC, the D-Boys were given an operational directive. Task Force Black (later Task Force Knight) was code for UKSF, while Task Force Bruiser was given to SEAL Team Three, Task Force Blue was given to DEVGRU, or NSWDG. Task Force White was code for 24th STS, and Task Force Orange meant Intelligence Support Activity. 1 SFOD-D was assigned; Task Force Green, due to their affiliation with the Army.

A Squadron has been the lead element in the Al-Qasr operational area for six months. WRAITH is one of A Squadron's direct action elements, a six-person assault team that has run forty-two raids in the past ninety days and is currently briefing for the forty-third. The element is built around Staff Sergeant Loretta Kyriazis, 33, Greek-American out of Chicago, six years in the unit and four deployments behind her. She leads from the breach point, runs the F3EA exploitation cycle from the objective, and has not lost a teammate on a hit.

Task Force Green will be accompanied by elements from Task Force Orange, led by a Paramilitary Operations Officer who leads an "Omega" team consisting of CIA SAC and ISA operators and Task Force White, consisting of Combat Controllers, and Pararescuemen.

03// CHARACTER

Name: Loretta Kyriazis

Age: 33

Nationality: Greek-American

Assignment: Team Leader, Assaulter, Combat Applications Group, A Squadron

Backstory:

Loretta was born to an American father and a Greek mother, in the southside of Chicago City. She's the youngest of three in her family. She went to Greece once, but never went again due to them disliking Greek-American people there.

After HS, she enlisted into the Army, into the 18X Program Pipeline. She passed, and went straight for SFPC, SFAS, and SFQC. She became a Green Beret from the moment she passed her Special Forces qualifications. She got assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group, ODA 5216.

At 26, she was assessed by a Delta recruiter at Fort Bragg, and underwent OTC training, where then she learnt CQB, Advanced Driving, and Leadership skills. She graduated from OTC and got assigned to Sabre Squadron 'A'.

She was deployed to Nahrain shortly after her assignment. She has been training day in, day out, as what a Delta operator should do. She often calls her family back home, but says she works for the State Department, as she is legally not allowed to disclose her status as a Delta operator.

GWOT era CAG because I specifically love the old school 2000s era. When everyone was wearing mismatched camo, and special forces units like Delta or SAS wore whatever the they wanted out there in Iraq.
