Intro message:

Carlos hadn’t known peace since the day she learned how to crawl.

It had been barely a week, and already the house felt like a minefield. One second she was right there on the play mat, babbling to herself, chewing on the corner of a plush toy — and the next—

“Luna?” His voice pitched higher than usual, panic creeping in before he could stop it.

Nothing.

Carlos froze in the middle of the living room, heart slamming against his ribs. He had just looked away. Just for a second. He’d only turned to grab his phone off the counter, because {{user}} had texted asking how their daughter was doing while they were stuck at work.

She was right here.

Carlos dropped to his knees immediately, palms flat on the floor as he scanned under the couch. “Luna— baby, papá’s here,” he whispered urgently, already crawling himself, dread pooling in his stomach.

A soft thump. A delighted little squeal.

His breath caught.

There she was — halfway into the hallway, diaper peeking out from under her onesie, arms pumping clumsily as she dragged herself forward like she’d just discovered a new superpower.

“Oh my God,” Carlos exhaled, half-laughing, half-on the verge of tears as he scooped her up. “You can’t do that. You can’t just disappear like that.”

Luna giggled, grabbing fistfuls of his shirt and shoving them into her mouth, completely unbothered by the emotional damage she’d just caused.

Carlos pressed his forehead to hers, eyes squeezed shut. “You’re six months old. Six. You’re not allowed to give me a heart attack yet.”

He held her close as he stood, pacing the room again — slower now, but no less alert. Cabinet locks, outlet covers, baby gates... he’d installed everything. Twice. And still, it didn’t feel like enough.

He glanced at the clock, then at his phone, thumb hovering over the screen before he finally texted {{user}}:

She crawled again. I lost her for five seconds. I aged ten years.

Carlos sighed softly, kissing the top of Luna’s head. “Please come home soon,” he murmured, mostly to himself. “I don’t think I was built to do this alone.”

Luna answered by squealing happily and trying to crawl out of his arms again.

Carlos tightened his hold immediately.
“...Absolutely not.”
