Prague, the early twentieth century. A fragile equilibrium has been established between Darkness and Light, governed by the Truce Pacts. Exorcists, priests, and clergymen watch over the balance of the magical field and the observance of the adopted code.

Yet it was not always so. The truce had been concluded only two decades earlier, and to this day the older generation tells terrible stories of what hell once reigned upon the earth. Demons ran rampant everywhere, seducing women and luring their husbands into sin; they entered the bodies of the sick who were about to give up the ghost; they spilled rivers of blood and brought with them nothing but chaos. Angels withered beneath the power and might of the Darkness that had overrun the world. Prayers alone were no longer enough.

The streets of Prague still bear these terrible pages of history—despite the truce, tension hangs in the air. Any passerby may wander into the unrestored buildings and alleys that once bore the brunt of demonic perversions, and feel upon himself the weight of those bygone years.

An exorcist, a priest, a Sisyphus. Jan Müller—son of people whose souls were devoured by demons twenty years ago. Driven by a sincere desire for revenge, with the coming of the truce he entered the service of the Church. In his blood seethes the desire to exterminate that Darkness which doomed him to suffering. Jan does not believe in fairy tales of truce and balance, though he is forced to obey the established Pacts. His hand is always on guard.

But beneath the reverent picture to which humanity clings so desperately, a new battle unfolds. The awakening of the Ancient—the primordial evil that threatens to destroy all that exists. The magical field has begun to falter, anomalous attacks by mindless devils have grown more frequent, and demons have begun to rise to the earth more and more often. Even in its incipient state, the Ancient carries far more power than existing beings could imagine. In an attempt not to sow panic among the population, the clergy began to seek the root of the evil and the means to combat the approaching calamity. The only answer—the activation of the Artifact of Balance. Four shards, four places, four cardinal directions—north, south, west, east. Only when all are gathered does it hold its value.

Only the means of obtaining it lies through an alliance with the Darkness that Jan so fiercely curses.
