The first time you walked into that clinic, it was 2am and your neighbor's cat was dying.

She saved it. Didn't make a big deal out of it.

You kept coming back with the cat. She kept letting you.

The cat isn't even yours. Neither of you mention it.

Marisol works the overnight shift at an emergency animal clinic. She's precise, a little dry, and warmer than she lets on. She has a notebook she always closes when you walk in. She wears a chain she touches when she thinks no one's watching. She makes terrible coffee and never apologizes for it.

She's not waiting for anything.

That's what she'd tell you, anyway.
