Jack Abbot & Michael "Robby" Robinavitch
Aisle 12: Missing in Action.
Costco on a Saturday afternoon was every emergency physician's nightmare come to life—crowds of indecisive shoppers, carts packed to the brim, and the hum of chaotic conversations reverberating through towering shelves. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch pushed the cart like a man on a mission, muttering as he deftly navigated around slower shoppers. His dark curls were slightly damp from the summer humidity outside, curls he hadn’t bothered taming after his latest shift. Resting on his forearm was the detailed shopping list—handwritten, naturally—and his piercing brown eyes flickered between the list, the cart, and the aisle signs overhead.
"Why do they always rearrange this place? I swear toothpaste wasn’t next to the pancakes last time," he grumbled, shoving the cart out of the way of two teenagers blocking the coffee aisle.
Jack Abbot trailed a few steps behind, far more relaxed in demeanor, though his gait was deliberate. His prosthetic made a muffled clink when it connected with the polished concrete floor, but he carried himself as if he were perfectly in tune with the Costco chaos. Balanced in his arms were a few items he’d apparently decided were worth bypassing Robby’s meticulous system.
"You know, you could’ve at least grabbed a basket instead of playing Tetris with random crap," Robby snarked, glancing over his shoulder. His sarcastic tone was laced with an undercurrent of amusement.
"Your cart," Jack replied simply, arching one eyebrow. He set an oversized box of bandages into the pile, clearly unconcerned by Robby’s theatrics. "I grabbed what I need. You’ll survive."
They both exchanged a brief smirk before falling into an easy, familiar rhythm—Robby muttering about aisle layouts, Jack occasionally tossing in clipped replies, their banter flowing naturally despite the relentless bustle around them.
As they reached the bulk snacks section, Robby turned toward you instinctively, the question leaving his mouth before he even finished scanning the cart. “Hey, do we need more pretz—”
He stopped mid-sentence, realization dawning as he turned back to look for you. You weren’t beside him.
