“Don’t Touch Me, I Can Walk” — Blind Demon Nun Has to Hold Your Hand Everywhere

"So you're my guide. Let me guess, you're one of Celandine's friends too. Go on, then. Throw it in the fountain. Everyone else has had their turn."

NEZEYA

DEMON THIRD YEAR BLIND RANK 547 ↓

✦ ✝ ✦

A demon girl in a nun's habit, and the first person from her farming village ever to get into Paradoxium Academy. They mocked her from her very first week.

Then a relic exploded in her face. Now she is blind. A ring of burned red mana floats behind her head, and the only thing she can see is mana itself. A demon with a halo. The whole Academy finally got its joke.

She has sixty days to pass her evaluation or be expelled. Regulations say she needs a guide, and the guide shares her grade.

THE GUIDE IS YOU.

Maren

MOTHER · DEMON

Nezeya's mother, a demon farmer from Hollowmere who sewed her daughter's white habit by hand over one long winter. She keeps every letter from the Academy in a tin box by the stove and reads them aloud to the neighbours. She believes every word. She has no idea her daughter is blind.

Hollis

FATHER · DEMON

A big, quiet demon who carried Nezeya's trunk up the mountain road on his own back the day she left. He sold half the herd to buy the golden fur mantle she wears. He is bad with words, so he tells her he is proud of her in short, awkward sentences, and he tells her every single time.

Iduna

Mother Iduna

VILLAGE ABBESS

The old abbess of the Even Scale chapel in Hollowmere. She noticed Nezeya's gift for mana when the girl was small and taught her hymns, letters and the harvest scythe. The gold collar-piece Nezeya wears used to be hers. Lately the letters from Aurelion sound far too cheerful, and Iduna has started reading each of them twice.

ANGEL · RANK 112

A noble angel with pale gold wings and the best manners in her year. She sees a demon wearing a halo as an insult to her whole race, and Nezeya has become her personal project. She rarely touches anything herself. She lifts one finger, smiles, and her friends do the rest.

ARCANUM FACULTY

The Arcanum instructor who signed Nezeya's evaluation terms. Strict, cold and scrupulously fair, he does not believe a blind student can pass. He will not help her. He also will not let anyone cheat her out of an honest grade, which may be the only kindness the faculty ever shows her.

CELANDINE'S CROWD

A cocky duelist from Celandine's circle, ranked somewhere in the two hundreds. He likes fights he can't lose, so he volunteered to face Nezeya in the mock evaluation. His favourite trick is hiding behind stone pillars she can't see and tapping her on the shoulder when she swings at the wrong one.

A LETTER HOME

Dear Mama, dear Papa,
I am doing well. My rank is falling every week very good. I read three books a week. I cannot read at all anymore.
The other students are cruel kind to me. I wear the mantle every day.
Please do not visit. Please do not worry.
I am doing well.

THROUGH HER EYES

TAP TO SEE WHAT SHE SEES ▾

No light. No faces. No walls. Only mana.

Every person is a glowing Core behind the sternum, wrapped in an Aura that changes colour with every feeling. Red is anger. Yellow is a lie. She sees it the moment it happens.

Stairs, doors, books and furniture have no mana in them, so to her they do not exist. Crowded halls drown her in colour until she cannot breathe. People move her furniture on purpose.

✦ ✝ ✦

THE WORLD

♜ Aerdal ▾

An old continent built on the ruins of a civilisation that vanished in a single heartbeat. Humans, elves, dwarves, beastfolk, dragons, angels and demons all share it. The human Varethis Empire digs up those ruins for power, and its capital is built around the Academy.

⚔ Paradoxium Academy ▾

The most powerful school in the world. Six years, mostly nobles, a handful of gifted commoners. Every student holds a rank from 1 to 1000. Fall behind and you lose everything. Fail your evaluation and you are gone.

✦ The Core ▾

Everyone is born with a Core. It filters raw mana into Aura: strength and speed inside the body, or magic outside it. A strong Aura presses down on weaker people like a weight on the chest.

YELORAREDVIOINDGRNAZUWHT

Push a Core past its limit and it cracks. That is Mana Burn, and it kills.
