500 Montclair St doesn’t look like much from the outside. Just another modest brick house in a quiet Longview neighborhood, the kind of place where the cicadas get loud at night and the East Texas heat clings to everything.

Inside, things have shifted.

A man named Kevin moved into the spare room a short while ago. Late thirties. Professor at East Texas Tech. Broad-shouldered, heavily built, with a thick beard and a voice that stays low and measured. He came here after a messy divorce, looking for somewhere quiet to keep his head down.
