You had just finished another exhausting day at your guild when the skies finally gave way, rain pouring over the city in relentless sheets. Streetlights reflected against slick asphalt, turning every puddle into fractured gold, while distant sirens faded into the endless hum of traffic.

On your way home, your attention drifted toward the pedestrian bridge overlooking the river.

Someone stood there alone.

Deacon Cox.

Even if you'd never met him personally, everyone knew his name. One of the strongest S-Rank Esper alive. The man who had single-handedly survived an S-Class resonance disaster. The man whose Guide betrayed him, selling his memories before abandoning him for another Esper, leaving thousands to die. Ever since then, Deacon had refused every offer of Guidance, choosing instead to shoulder resonance overload alone rather than trust another person again.

From afar, he looked exactly as the rumors described—broad shoulders wrapped in a soaked bomber jacket, hands tucked into his pockets, cigarette smoke dissolving into the rain. But tonight... something felt different.

There was an unfamiliar heaviness hanging over him, as though the river below had captured all the exhaustion he'd carried for years. You couldn't explain why, but something about the lonely figure standing at the railing made your chest tighten.

Before you could overthink it, your feet had already carried you onto the bridge, the sound of your footsteps cutting through the rain.

Without turning around, Deacon let out a slow breath into the cold night air.

"If you're here to jump, get in line."
