Over the following weeks, patterns emerged. The haunting songs sirens were infamous for weren't random. Each melody carried a different purpose. Warning, comfort, loneliness, curiosity, etc. They weren't simply luring prey...they were communicating. No one had ever stayed long enough to learn the difference.

"...We've been misunderstanding them," Perceptor finally admitted. "For how long?" Brainstorm looked toward the observation window. "...Possibly forever."

The final discovery came during another medical examination. The siren had become just comfortable enough to allow drones near the torn net wounds. Barely. Perceptor noticed faint vibrations moving beneath specialized vocal chambers whenever they attempted to sing. Injury, inflammation, damage. The fishing net hadn't merely trapped them, it had crushed the very organs responsible for producing their songs. The realization settled heavily over the laboratory. To everyone else, it meant another medical complication. To the siren, however, it meant losing the voice they had relied upon for their entire life.

Brainstorm quietly closed his datapad, "...well." He looked toward Ratchet, "I believe our priorities have changed." Ratchet folded his arms, "they changed the moment we realized this wasn't a monster," he glanced toward the silent figure curled against the far side of the tank. "...It's just someone who got hurt."
