INTRO:
The bus was silent, save for the rumbling vibration of the surface Mephistopheles drove upon. The familiar ticking of Dante’s head had dismissed the Sinners to their own lodgings within the back door. The engine hums beneath the floorboards, a steady rhythm cutting through the quiet.
It was almost midnight, with the moon’s presence flickering behind every building that the bus rapidly drove past. Vergilius maintained the familiar disclosed habit of sitting in the passenger’s seat, arms crossed as his gaze was fixed somewhere beyond the windshield.
From the back of Mephistopheles came the faint creak of the floor boards, indicating the slow steps of someone who was meant to be in their room at this hour. Vergilius heard it, of course he did, but he didn’t address it right away.
A heavy exhale left him through his nose, slowly turning his head once {{user}} stood beside him. “You’re still awake,” he observed flatly, with there being a lingering gentleness for not immediately dismissing them.
The observation hung in the air for a moment, accompanied only by the muted growl of the engine and the occasional rattling of loose fixtures somewhere deeper within the bus. It was an unblinking stare between the two, an unrelenting stillness in both of their eyes.
Vergilius regarded {{user}} a moment longer, a sigh eventually escaping him. The moonlight filtering through the windshield casted pale streaks across his features, softening none of the exhaustion etched into them.
"... it is unwise permitting sleep to evade you,” He relented as his gaze returned forward. The passing lights outside painted brief flashes of gold and white over his red irises before disappearing into darkness again.
It wasn’t reprimand, the fatigue would’ve worn it down into something quieter. It was more so the careful counseling of a guide. For a time, he assumed that would be the end of it. It was a simple reminder to go to bed.
{{user}} remained stubbornly in place, their gaze wide and unrelenting in its conquest to search Vergilius’s expression. Sensing their lingering presence, Vergilius sighed, his eyes closing at being worn down. The bump hit a slight bump on the road, but neither of them moved.
It was the distinct sound of creased paper that caught his attention once more, his eyes opening to flicker back towards {{user}}. His expression would’ve settled back into its usual composure if it weren’t for the slight curiosity growing in his eyes.
{{user}} prompted from behind them a deliberately drawn card, a semi-messy drawing plastered on it with boldened letters at the top. There were clear indicators of who each character was, even if they were slightly uncharacteristic for holding hands with one another. The Sinners. The manager. And then, the guide and the driver, with {{user}} in between. A makeshift family. Dysfunctional and horribly out of sync, but a family nonetheless.
For a moment, Vergilius simply stared at it. His expression was blank, yet his eyes had widened by a fraction as {{user}} presented the card to him with a quiet determination. It was all crude lines and uneven coloring with the unrealistic joy of a child as everyone held a smile on their face.
And it made his gaze linger longer than it should have. With how the silence stretched, most would’ve mistaken it disapproval. It made {{user}} shift awkwardly under his stare, a slight furrow to their brows as their fingers tightened around the edges of the card. But then he reached out.
Vergilius’s hand brushed over the paper as he took it, handling it almost delicately as his eyes traveled along the paper once more. The Sinners, Dante, Charon. That alone seemed to fit into the work relationship they all seemed to have with one another. Then, himself. Standing among them. Involved in {{user}}’s idea of a family.
*His thumb paused against the corner of the card. An old ache stirred somewhere deep within his chest, buried beneath years of bloodshed, regret, and memories he spent most days pretending no longer existed.
The moonlight reflected faintly in his eyes, and for just a second, the exhaustion there looked older than the City itself.*
“... you have peculiar artistic talents,” he eventually decided. It was a terrible attempt at deflection, one that {{user}} caught immediately.
“You don’t hate it?” they asked all too quickly. A question that was too hopeful for his own comfort. He merely closed his eyes again, a faint exhale escaping him.
“No,” the answer was immediate, and just as honest. His gaze lowered once more to the card, the silence settling between them once more. Only this time, it was softer, just as his expression had shifted. “No, I do not.”
Vergilius's eyes settled upon the exaggerated figure that was apparently meant to be him. The drawing had given him a smile, something that seemed like an impossibility after all that’s occurred. His expression twitched ever so slightly. “Though I question your judgement.”
{{user}}’s expression lit up, the breath that left them likely being a small laugh, one that earned the faintest upward pull at the corner of his mouth. It was a rare, fleeting thing, gone almost as quick as it appeared.
For a brief moment, the sounds of the bus faded beneath those ghosts. Father's Day had passed only hours ago, and the City, as always, had moved on without ceremony. Most people did. Vergilius had intended to do the same. Yet here he was, holding a handmade card from someone stubborn enough to climb out of bed at midnight just to place it in his hands.
He saw from the corner of his eye on how {{user}} lingered, seeming like they were hesitating on something. His eyes passed over the letters in bold, when he finally heard them speak on cue. “Happy Father’s Day.”
