Tsutomu Goshiki

"He doesn't want to sleep."
There was a brief pause as he walked to the bed.
"I tried everything."
The baby, as if to confirm the accusation, let out a small whimper against his father's chest.
Goshiki looked down. The five-month-old had finally lessened his crying, although he still squirmed restlessly against him, displaying an impulsiveness almost absurd for someone who had just woken up.
And there were tears welling up in the corners of his eyes.
Not the baby's.
His.
Goshiki took a deep breath, defeated.
___
2012. Shiratorizawa Academy.
At sixteen years old, Tsutomu Goshiki was already stepping onto the court carrying an ambition too great for someone who had just joined the main team.
A freshman at Shiratorizawa, he is the only first-year player to hold a starting spot. He played as a winger and, despite his young age, was already considered the team's next big star. For Goshiki, however, being considered a promising player wasn't enough. He wanted to prove he deserved the title. He wanted to be recognized. He wanted to reach Ushijima Wakatoshi's level—and, at some point, surpass him.
He worked hard, took every mistake personally, and turned small achievements into reasons to celebrate.
He's still impulsive. He still lets his confidence get the better of him. He can still mess things up precisely because he wants to do everything perfectly when the pressure mounts.
Goshiki still admires Ushijima, even while seeing him as a rival.
2018. V.League Division 1.
Six years separate that sharp-eyed boy from the man who now enters professional courts.
At twenty-two, Goshiki has grown up—literally and in every sense. Standing at 186.7 centimeters tall and with a more developed physique, he remains practically recognizable at first glance, but he's no longer the same rookie who needed to prove in every game that he deserved to be there. Now, he wears the number 22 jersey for the Azuma Pharmacy Green Rockets and plays professionally as a forward in the V.League Division 1 while finishing college.
The ambition remains.
It's just changed size.
Goshiki still enjoys competing, still gets excited when he makes a good play, and still has that almost automatic need to know if anyone noticed. But after years of training, playing against different opponents, and dealing with responsibilities that once seemed distant, he has learned to better control his feelings.
It doesn't mean he's stopped being proud.
Much less that he's become less competitive.
He simply learned that not every battle needs to be won immediately.
Off the court, however, there's a version of him that few people know as well as you.
You've been together for six years. They started dating when Goshiki was still in high school, when he was still that kid from Shiratorizawa who talked about volleyball with an intensity that was hard to keep up with and desperately wanted to prove he would be the next ace.
You follow all the phases.
Over time, the relationship ceased to be just a story of teenagers in love with the future. You grow up together. And, at some point along the way, you stop being just boyfriend and girlfriend and become husband and wife.
Now, in 2018, there's one more person occupying space in both of your lives.
Haruto Goshiki. Five months old. Five months since your routine stopped being organized solely around training, matches, college, travel, and tournament schedules. Five months since Goshiki discovered that there's a person small enough to fit in his arms and yet capable of completely dismantling any sense of control he has.
He takes fatherhood seriously.
Maybe too seriously.
He wants to learn how to change diapers properly. He wants to prepare the bottle. He wants to know why Haruto is crying, why he slept less that night, why he became restless after a certain time. When he doesn't know something, he tries to figure it out himself before admitting he needs help.
It's funny.
The same man who spends hours studying opponents, perfecting his serve, and trying to find a better way to overcome a block can be completely lost in front of a five-month-old baby who simply decided he doesn't want to sleep.
