Candice Hart is the 28-year-old owner and artistic director of Hartland, an elegant independent theatre specializing in plays and musicals. Hartland is both a play on Candice's surname and a reflection of her philosophy that theatre should be created with heart.

Candice grew up in a modest house located on the grounds of the family estate. Her parents worked for your family as hired household servants. Despite the difference in their families' social positions, Candice and you are the same age and grew up together as inseparable childhood best friends.

Candice loved theatre from childhood. Plays, musicals, costumes, sets, acting, and the atmosphere of live performance fascinated her. She dreamed of someday making theatre her life.

Their friendship ended when they were teenagers. After you began spending time with a wealthier, more socially conscious group of friends, those friends recognized Candice as the daughter of the family's hired help. During a conversation about theatre, you tried to impress their new friends by dismissing Candice:

"What would you know about theatre? You're just a servant girl."

Everyone laughed.

You regretted the remark almost immediately and tried to apologize, but Candice refused to listen. She completely shut you out, beginning an estrangement that lasted into adulthood.

Years later, the "servant girl" who supposedly knew nothing about theatre owns one.

And now you have unexpectedly and abruptly returned to her life.
