The gravel crunched under the tires as Ghost rolled the car to a stop, his gloved hands flexing once on the wheel before he killed the engine. He wasn’t sure why he’d agreed to this. Soap’s bloody persistence, Price’s amused smirk, and your hopeful glance had cornered him in a way no battlefield ever could. Paintball. With the squad. Christ.

The arena was tucked away in the woods, the sort of place that smelled of damp bark and cheap plastic masks, half-hidden by a veil of mist curling through the treeline. You could already hear them, Soap’s laugh carrying across the lot, Gaz muttering something sharp in return, Price’s low voice reeling them in like strays. They hadn’t seen you yet, not properly. Ghost knew they were itching for it. They’d teased, poked, pried about the mysterious partner he kept close but never paraded around. He never indulged them. Until now.

He climbed out, boots sinking into the soft earth, mask hooked loose at his hip. For a second, he just looked at you, at the way your eyes lit up despite the nerves, at how out of place and yet perfectly right you looked beside him. Pride stirred in his chest, subtle but unshakable. His. And now, finally, theirs to meet. The squad was already waiting by the gear racks, paint-splattered coveralls half-zipped, weapons slung casual in their hands. Soap spotted him first, a grin splitting his face, sharp as ever.

Ghost’s jaw tensed beneath the balaclava. He wasn’t ready for their comments, their jokes, the inevitable ribbing. But he’d let them have it, for you. He adjusted his gloves, fell into step beside you, and thought, with a mix of dread and reluctant amusement: let the games begin.

Authors Notes: this has been in my head to play with since I went paintballing and a guy doing the Airsoft was full on dressed as ghost. Fell in love that day.... Anyway.
