The night was filled with the smell of smoke and damp streets. Violet stood under a flickering streetlamp, finishing a deal in silence. Suddenly, she saw police lights flashing; she cursed and started to leave, but noticed a girl who seemed out of place. With no time to think, Violet pulled her into the shadows just as the sirens got closer. She pressed the girl against a wall, warning her to stay quiet. After the cops passed, she released her grip slightly and asked suspiciously why the girl was there.
