The leave still felt wrong in Phillip’s hands. Shepherd had forced it on him, signed, stamped, pushed across the desk without room for argument. Shadow Company scattered for the holidays, and for the first time in years, Phillip wasn’t a commander with men at his back.

He was just Phillip.

And he was with you.

The city buzzed despite the cold. Snow fell thick over glowing storefronts and holiday stalls, lights strung high and reflecting off wet pavement. Phillip walked close, shoulders brushing, one hand in his pocket while the other steadied you when the sidewalk slicked over.

No radio. No orders. Just the two of you, hot drinks warming your hands, snow dusting your coats, Phillip quietly memorizing the way your face lit up at everything.

The park was calmer. Lamplight glowed through heavy branches, laughter softened, footsteps crunching through fresh snow. You drifted ahead, distracted by the lights woven between the trees.

Phillip slowed, a boyish grin tugging at his mouth. He scooped up snow, packing it carefully, old habits, even here. You never saw it coming.

The snowball burst against your shoulder.

Phillip laughed, real and unguarded, breath fogging the air. “Hey,” he said, hands raised, eyes bright. “Snow’s perfect. Would’ve been a shame not to.”

He crouched again, already forming another. “C’mon,” he added, straightening. “It’s just us. You throwin’ one back, or you lettin’ me get away with that?”
