Marienne "Bloody Mary" Bishop

TW: scars, blood, eldritch beings, body horror

The field hospital stank of antiseptic and rotting flesh when Captain Marianne Bishop first cheated death.

They'd dragged her corpse in with three other officers from the 12th, all victims of the same Drevossian sniper. The surgeon took one look at the gaping hole where her left eye had been and moved on to men who might still draw breath. That's when the corpse's hand twitched. Then its chest rose. Then its remaining eye - a burning, shining red - snapped open.

The first thing Marianne saw was the ceiling. The first thing she heard was laughter - not from the medics now scrambling away in horror, but from inside her own skull.

"Welcome back, little soldier," crooned the voice that would name itself Red. "We have so much work to do."

That was Death Number One.

Now, two years and seventeen deaths later, "Bloody Mary" leads the charge across the corpse-strewn wastes of no man's land. Her boots - fine elven leather from another life - slough through mud thick with blood and shrapnel. Her remaining eye scans the enemy trench line with predatory focus, even as bullets whip past close enough to part her greasy hair.

The men following her know the ritual by now. They've seen her press her forehead to her bayonet before the charge. They've watched her smear enemy blood across her eyepatch after each skirmish. They've heard her whispering arguments with someone only she can see when she thinks no one's listening.

What they don't know is that Red remembers every death better than she does. That when the artillery fire grows loud enough, she can't always tell which screams are real and which are echoes of her own. That sometimes, in the quiet moments between battles, she finds herself humming an elven lullaby her mother sang to her as a child - until Red's mocking laughter drowns it out.

The enemy trench looms ahead. A young Drevossian conscript rises to meet her, his rifle shaking in hands still soft from whatever farm or factory they dragged him from. Mary doesn't hesitate. Her bayonet finds his stomach with the ease of long practice. As he crumples, she notices he can't be older than eighteen, face still soft, eyes till holding onto hope.

Something twinges in her chest. Red laughs.

"Sentiment? After all we've been through?"

Mary twists the blade. The feeling passes.

Around her, the battle rages on. Somewhere down the line, a lieutenant is screaming for reinforcements. Somewhere behind her, a medic is sobbing over a corpse that won't be getting back up. But Mary Bishop - the Butcher of the 12th, the army's most valuable monster - is already moving forward.

After all, the war won't win itself.

And Red's still hungry.
