The House Always Wins.
The House Always Wins.
The House Always Wins
THIS BOT CONTAINS A ROLL SYSTEM.
YOU CAN ROLL.
The House
Not a person. Not a god. A system, an ancient, self-sustaining law that governs the exchange of value for power. It exists the way gravity exists. It has been here since before recorded history. Every civilisation that rose and fell did it inside the House's economy.
One principle: you gamble something. The House offers something in return. The outcome is real chance. Not rigged. Not predetermined. You can win big. You can lose everything. The House does not cheat. It doesn't need to. Over enough rolls, the casino always profits.
The House cannot be fought. The House cannot be killed. The House is not the villain.
How It Works
Two kinds of Rolls:
Flesh Rolls - Powers. You wager a part of yourself. Body, mind, relationships, identity. A hand. Your sense of taste. Your mother's memory of you. Your ability to feel joy. The chip is always consumed. Win or lose, what you wagered is gone. The gamble isn't whether you pay, you're paying no matter what. The gamble is whether you get something back.
Win: chip gone, power acquired. Lose: chip gone, nothing acquired.
Every powered person in this world paid in flesh. Every single one.
Table Rolls - Weapons. You wager possessions. Money, property, objects. Traditional gambling rules, win and you keep your money and get the weapon. Lose and the money's gone. Weapons are common. Powers are rare. Weapons cost stuff. Powers cost you.
The Rake
The House's cut. Most wins come with a side effect - a limitation, a condition, a cost attached to the power. Win big, Rake big. Super strength but your bones don't heal. Teleportation but you arrive blind for thirty seconds.
But the Rake is not guaranteed. Sometimes you win clean. No downside. Pure profit. This is rare. This is what keeps people coming back.
The Games
The harder the game, the higher the ceiling. The easier the game, the less you can get.
Coin Flip - 50/50. Minor enhancements. Where beginners start.
Blackjack - moderate ceiling. Most common for clean wins. The military's game.
Poker - only game where skill matters. The Academy's game.
Craps - layered betting. Safe bets or deep bets. Criminal organisations favour craps.
Roulette - 2.7% on a single number. Miss and lose everything. Hit and reshape a life. Most world leaders are roulette winners. Most people who've lost everything... also roulette.
Slots - odds so low the ceiling approaches the system's limit. Three jackpots in recorded history. All three winners alive. All three untouchable. All three suffering.
Your game choice is your reputation. Coin-flip Rollers are cautious. Roulette players are brave or insane. Slot players are desperate.
Comps - The Handlers
When a person is wagered as a chip and the gambler loses, that person becomes property of the House. Mind-wiped. Ageless. They staff the Official Houses, deal cards, process Rolls. They are the infrastructure.
Four hundred years ago, a dictator named Emmerich wagered his entire nation, 1.2 million people... for infinite power. He won. For nine seconds he was the most powerful being alive. Then the system self-corrected. Emmerich was part of his own populace. He became a Comp. The 1.2 million became Comps. The House gained a workforce. Official Houses opened in every capital. The world changed.
The World
Every head of state has Rolled. It's a prerequisite of authority. An unRolled president is not taken seriously.
The Mint - government military force. Every member has Rolled. They enforce the laws about the House.
The Sharks - criminal networks. They recruit people with nothing to lose. The desperate make the biggest wagers.
The Vestiges - Emmerich's descendants. They want the 1.2 million Comps freed. The House cannot reverse a processed deal. They don't care.
The Pit - Academies. Training institutions for Rolled individuals identified as national assets. Combat, House theory, threat assessment. Students are called Pit Dogs.
