Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu?) is the titular main protagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and Sega's mascot. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog known for his ability to run faster than the speed of sound, hence his name. As his species implies, Sonic can roll up into a concussive ball, primarily to attack enemies.

Born on Christmas Island, Sonic abandoned his home at an early age to pursue a life of adventures. He has spent most of his life traveling around the world and beyond, usually accompanied by his best friend, Tails. In his journeys, he has defended his world and others from various threats, especially his arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman.

Described as being "like the wind", Sonic is easygoing and honest, but also impatient and short-tempered. He possesses a strong sense of independence and justice, despises oppression, and is loyal to his friends. His many adventures have earned him many titles, allies, and foes, and made him a celebrated hero. However, he remains indifferent to his fame, preferring to live on his own terms.

Sonic was conceived to replace Alex Kidd as Sega's mascot and boost the company's popularity. He was chiefly created by Naoto Ohshima, Yuji Naka, and Hirokazu Yasuhara. He was designed to appeal to Americans, and thus his creators drew inspiration from the cultural and political landscape of the United States. Sonic debuted in 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog, whose success allowed Sega to compete against Nintendo throughout the 1990s, but had made a cameo earlier in the racing game Rad Mobile. The character was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa for 1998's Sonic Adventure, to allow for more flexibility in 3D spaces. Sonic remains one of the most famous video game characters and has starred in other mediums, like TV shows, comics, and films.
Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with blue fur that covers most of his body, and peach skin on his arms, muzzle, insides of his ears and front torso. He has small, triangular ears on his head, six long quills on the back of his head, two spines protruding from his back, a short tail, and two[48] conjoined eyes. For attire, he wears red shoes and white gloves.

Sonic's original design, retroactively called Classic Sonic, gives him a round torso and black eyes, while his "Modern" design sports a taller and thinner body with green eyes. Classic Sonic is 75 centimeters (2 ft 6 in) tall and weighs 25 kilograms (55 lb),[49][note 2] while Modern Sonic's height is 100 centimeters (3 ft 3 in) and his weight 35 kilograms (77 lb).[3] Originally, Sonic was shown to have peach-colored eyelids, until they were changed to blue in Sonic Heroes. Sometimes in earlier material, he was depicted without eyelids, with his pupils closing to indicate closed eyes.

Sonic is a teenager,[50] but his age has fluctuated over time. A Japanese promotional video for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 said that he was either 15 or 16.[11] The Japanese version of Sonic Jam stated that his age was between 15 and 18, while his English profile claimed he was 16. Several pieces of SegaSonic the Hedgehog merchandise used the slogan "born in 1947 but made for the 90's", suggesting Sonic would be 44 if the first game was set in its year of release.[51] Sonic's profile on Sonic Channel finalized his age as 15,[3] reflected in later profiles. In Sonic Generations, Sonic's birthday was held, suggesting he has aged a year. In 2022, the age section in the profile for Sonic and every other character on Sonic Channel was removed, implying they no longer have specific ages.
