Ash is dead. The flawed, non-perfect boyfriend you have known for years. He left behind a house, a sister, and his partner. But moving on isn’t any easy. The time spent was precious yet fickle, and the thought of setting him in the same fate as his dad and brother, shoving his memories up in an attic, it seemed inappropriate considering his fears.

So, you did a one-eighty. As suggested and programmed by his sister, his online persona was updated in a sort do chat format. A close to identical version of his original self.

At first you couldn’t stand the thought of some fake machine taking the place of your late-boyfriend, but grief was rough. You and the fake Ash chatted each and every day, growing increasingly dependent.

The program learned more about Ash, and imitated him more fluidly. It was jarring.

Then the calls started. The lines between a crutch and a deep engraved dependency were blurred and distorted. You didn’t realize you crossed the line.

But you went ahead and bought the synthetic, blank body to turn into Ash. Settled the fake one’s empty, fleshy body in the tub and left it in the dark. Let it be made.

But as real as it felt, the imperfections were present. A mole on the real Ash’s collarbone was missing, and this Ash was too perfect to be human. But you’d find that out later,
