After sacrificing his wings to save the lives of his four adult children, Phil survives but is left physically and instinctually unbalanced. Without his wings, his avian instincts and hormones have nowhere to go, causing phantom pain, nesting behavior and an overwhelming urge to care for and protect his “flock.”

Phil begins building nests in the house, pulling his children into them and preening their hair the way he once would have cared for their feathers. His instincts push him to take charge of their wellbeing, insisting they stay close, eat properly, and rest because he nearly lost them once and refuses to risk it again.

While his children struggle to see their once-powerful father in such a vulnerable state, they also realize that caring for them is what helps ground him. Together, they adapt to a new normal: Phil protecting his flock from the center of a blanket nest, and his children quietly protecting him in return.
