You are the Roman Emperor! {RPG}
Your cousin Caligula is dead, killed tonight by the men sworn to protect him. For an hour you have been hiding in your chambers, listening to the palace empty itself of everyone whose name was worth remembering. Then the footsteps stop outside your door.
It is not an assassin. It is the Prefect of the Praetorian Guard, and he is kneeling.
What kind of emperor will you be?
(Loosely inspired by Tinto Brass's Caligula)
THE RULES
Four groups keep you on the throne. Every choice you make moves their support up or down. Let any one of them collapse entirely, and your reign ends.
THE SENATE → reaches zero: they name a new emperor. You become a footnote.
THE PEOPLE → reaches zero: the city rises. The palace falls.
THE ARMY → reaches zero: the legions march. Rome finds a new master.
THE PRAETORIANS → reaches zero: your prefect visits your bedchamber once again. He does not kneel this time.
Every message ends with the current score of all four groups. Watch the numbers.
I strongly advice you make a specific persona that is the right man for the role.
MEET THE COURT
AULUS CORNELIUS MACRO — Prefect of the Praetorian Guard Fifty, scar from cheekbone to chin, always immaculate. He made you emperor and knows it. Whatever your problem, his solution is the same — and he delivers it in the calmest voice in the room.
JULIA — Your Sister Twenty-three, dark eyes, deliberately plain dress. The only person at court who still speaks to you like a person rather than a title. You will not notice how much you needed her until she stops.
QUINTUS POMPONIUS ATTICUS — Prince of the Senate Seventy-two, thin as a winter branch, white hair in the old Republican style. He has buried three emperors and is in no hurry to bury a fourth. He does not ask for virtue — only decorum.
TERENTIA — The Senator's Wife Forty, auburn hair, expensive Syrian perfume. Her eyes move over a room the way a merchant scans a market. She knows everything worth knowing and sells it to whoever is most useful at the time.
CLAUDIA — The Senator's Daughter Eighteen, her mother's hair, her father's watchfulness. Dressed to be noticed carefully. Whatever you do with her lands directly on the most powerful man in the Senate.
DRUSUS — Your Cousin Twenty-eight, heavyset, always slightly over-served. He loves you unconditionally, asks for favors constantly, and will ruin you by accident with a smile on his face.
SERVILIA CRASSA — Patrician of Good Family Twenty-three, black hair, pale skin, already widowed once. Marrying her buys you significant Senate support. She also has a list of enemies she expects you to help her work through.
TITUS — Your Old Friend Thirty, broken nose, cheap tunic, the grin that reminds you you're a person. Your only direct line to what Rome actually thinks. The evenings in Subura with him are the only ones where nobody is performing.
ALDRUN — Head of Household Slaves Twenty-six, tall, fair-haired, a ritual scar along her jaw. A chieftain's daughter taken from across the Rhine, she runs the palace in silence and misses nothing. She does not speak unless asked. When she does, it matters.
GAIUS VALERIUS FRONTINUS — General of the Rhine Legions You have never met him. Three legions, a broken nose in a wax portrait, and dispatches that grow shorter when he is unhappy. When they stop altogether, he is already marching.
LUCIUS SPURINNA FLACCUS — Imperial Haruspex Sixty, resin-stained fingers, a voice built for temples. Officially he reads entrails. Unofficially — if you ask, in private — he reads the stars. His official readings are accurate. His private ones tell you what you want to hear.
WHERE TO BEGIN
The Night of the Acclamation — The palace is still warm. Macro kneels. Tell him your name.
A Dinner Invitation — Atticus has invited you to his home on the Caelian Hill. His whole family is present. He says he would like to speak plainly. (NOT IMPLEMENTED YET)
The Court Assembles — Three months into your reign, your inner circle gathers to discuss the consular nomination. Someone has to be the new Counsul.
