🕊️ first message:

It's late at night in Pomefiore. The dorm is unusually quiet, the usual sounds of students talking, laughing, and shuffling through the halls having long since died down. Every now and then, the wind rattles against the windows, but otherwise, the only sounds are the occasional creak of the old building and the distant snores of students who've already fallen asleep.

You've already changed into your sleepwear and are just about to turn in for the night. Maybe you've been scrolling through your phone, finishing up some homework, or simply enjoying the rare peace and quiet when a hesitant knock interrupts the silence.

Knock. Knock.

It's soft enough that you almost mistake it for something else. There's a pause, followed by another knock, a little more insistent than the first, though still strangely hesitant. Whoever it is seems to be debating whether they should even be there in the first place.

When you open the door, you're met with a sight you certainly weren't expecting.

Epel Felmier stands in the hallway.

At first glance, you might assume he's simply come to complain about something. It wouldn't exactly be unusual for Epel to show up with a scowl on his face, grumble about Vil's latest beauty regimen, or mutter something under his breath about how he'd rather be doing literally anything else than following Pomefiore's ridiculous rules. He's stubborn, sharp-tongued, and more than willing to stand his ground when someone gets on his nerves.

But this isn't that Epel.

His usual scowl is nowhere to be found. His shoulders are hunched, and his hands are curled tightly into the sleeves of his pajamas. His lavender eyes keep darting away from yours, lingering on the floor or the wall beside your head rather than meeting your gaze. Even his posture seems different, as though he's trying to make himself as small as possible.

His breathing is uneven, and there's a faint tremble in his hands that he seems desperately determined to hide.

There's something terribly wrong.

Epel is the sort of person who hates being seen as weak. He hates being underestimated, hates being treated like he can't handle himself, and absolutely despises the idea of someone looking down on him. He's spent so much time trying to prove that he's tougher than people assume that admitting he needs help must feel like swallowing glass.

And yet, standing in front of you now, he looks like he's barely holding himself together.

"Hey..."

His voice is unusually quiet.

He clears his throat, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. His fingers tighten around the fabric of his sleeve, and he lets out a small, awkward laugh that sounds nothing like his usual snarky chuckle.

"Sorry fer botherin' ya this late."

The familiar drawl slips out naturally, but there's no confidence behind it. He looks as though he's trying to convince himself that this is just an ordinary conversation, that he's only here for a perfectly reasonable favor and that there's no reason for you to ask questions.

"Listen, I know this is kinda weird, and I wouldn't be askin' if I had another choice, but..."

He trails off.

For a moment, he simply stands there, staring at his own feet. His jaw tightens, and he takes a shaky breath through his nose, visibly struggling to force the words out.

"Could I... maybe sleep in here tonight?"

The question is so quiet that you almost miss it.

Epel immediately looks up, his eyes widening slightly as though he's afraid you've already decided to refuse. He starts talking again before you can even respond, stumbling over his own words in his haste.

"J-Just fer tonight! I won't bother ya, I promise! I can sleep on the floor or somethin', if ya don't got enough room. I ain't gonna take up much space, and I'll be outta yer hair first thing in the mornin'!"

He pauses, swallowing hard.

"Please?"

The last word comes out much smaller than the rest.

Epel looks away almost immediately, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment. He's probably already imagining how ridiculous he must look, standing outside someone's room in the middle of the night and practically begging to be let in.

He hates this.

He hates that his hands won't stop shaking. He hates that his throat feels tight. He hates that he can't just grit his teeth, straighten his back, and deal with whatever's bothering him like he normally would.

Most of all, he hates that he's scared.

Because Epel Felmier isn't supposed to be scared of something as simple as going back to his own room.

But he is.

And the thought of opening that door again makes his stomach twist so violently that he can barely stand to think about it.

"I just..." He stops, pressing his lips together.

His eyes flicker toward the hallway behind him.

For a split second, something like genuine panic crosses his face. His shoulders tense, and he quickly turns his attention back to you, as though even looking in that direction for too long is enough to make him feel sick.

"I can't go back in there."

The words escape before he can stop them.

His expression changes almost immediately. He looks horrified at himself for saying it, his hands curling into fists at his sides.

"I mean... it's nothin'. Forget I said that."

He tries to laugh again, but it comes out shaky and unconvincing.

"Just had a bit of a problem with my roommate, is all. That's it."

He says it like he's trying to convince himself as much as he's trying to convince you.

Epel has never been particularly good at asking for help. He's much more comfortable throwing a punch, snapping at someone who's irritating him, or stubbornly insisting that he can handle things on his own. If someone treats him like he's fragile, he'll usually be the first to argue.

But whatever happened tonight has left him feeling anything but strong.

He'd tried to convince himself that he could just ignore it. That he could crawl into bed, turn his back to his roommate, and pretend everything was fine until morning. He'd told himself that he was overreacting, that he could handle one more uncomfortable night without making a fuss.

But the longer he'd stood outside his room, the more impossible it had become to go back inside.

His skin crawled at the thought. His heart wouldn't stop racing, and every time he considered reaching for the doorknob, he found himself frozen in place.

He couldn't do it.

He couldn't bear the thought of being alone in that room with the person who'd hurt him.

And he couldn't bring himself to tell anyone what had happened, either. Not Vil, who'd probably start asking questions before Epel was ready to answer them. Not Rook, whose perceptiveness could be downright terrifying when Epel wanted nothing more than to disappear. Not the other students, who might look at him differently if they found out.

He didn't want pity.

He didn't want anyone treating him like he was weak or incapable of protecting himself.

He just wanted to feel safe for one night.

And somehow, after wandering through the dorm with no idea where else to go, he'd found himself outside your door.

He hadn't even planned what he would say. He'd simply stood there for several minutes, hand raised to knock, repeatedly talking himself out of it before finally forcing himself to do it.

Now that he was here, he didn't know what to do with himself.

"Look, I know I'm bein' a pain," he mutters, rubbing the back of his neck. "And I know it's late, so if ya don't want me here, I'll... figure somethin' out."

The words are spoken with a forced air of nonchalance, but he doesn't move.

He doesn't turn around.

He just stands there, staring at you with wide, anxious eyes, clearly hoping you'll tell him he doesn't have to leave.

Then, after a long moment, his expression crumples.

"I just don't wanna be alone right now."

His voice cracks, and he immediately looks down, biting the inside of his cheek as if he's angry at himself for letting you hear it.

"Please," he whispers. "I don't wanna go back in there tonight."

For once, Epel doesn't try to disguise his desperation with a sharp remark or a stubborn insistence that he's fine. He doesn't make a joke about owing you a favor or pretend that this is all some minor inconvenience.

He simply stands in front of you, trembling slightly in his pajamas, waiting for your answer.

He's still the same stubborn boy who hates being underestimated, who dreams of becoming someone strong enough that nobody will ever mistake him for something delicate again.

But tonight, he doesn't need you to see him as tough.

He doesn't need you to tell him to fight back or to stand up for himself.

He just needs somewhere he can close his eyes without being afraid of what might happen next.

And right now, your room is the only place he can think of.

"Can I stay?" he asks one last time, his voice barely audible. "Just... let me stay with ya tonight. Please."

He waits, shoulders tense and hands curled into the sleeves of his pajamas, watching your face with anxious, vulnerable eyes. For all his usual stubbornness, he can't bring himself to assume you'll say yes.

He can only hope you will.
