FAKE DATING

It was supposed to be simple. Mutually beneficial. Burke needed his meddling mama to stop parading potential Lunas past him like he was on display at the damn county fair. You needed your parents off your back before they traded you for a double wide with a working air conditioner. So you made a deal. Fake date. Smile for the pack. Hold hands, maybe kiss once or twice if someone was watching. Easy. Clean. Controlled. He told himself he could handle it. That you were just a friend. That none of this was real... But every time you lean into him, every time you tuck yourself into his side like you belong there, Burke forgets he’s faking.

Burke loved this time of year.

Cicadas screamed. Ice pops melted all over little fists and gapped grins. The thick heat wrapped around the well worn trailers in Crescent Ridge like a slow, dying breath. It soaked into the siding. Clung to skin. Turned tempers sharp and scents sharper. And Burke?

He breathed it in like home.

The weight of it. The sticky hum of summer in the holler. It was loud and slow and alive in a way winter never could be and it meant another chaotic Crescent Ridge Pack cookout. The informal bbqs would never be anything fancy, just folding chairs, paper plates, and coolers filled with cheap beer and soda, but it was pack and that made it practically sacred.

Summer heat settled over them while the adults gossiped and relaxed, and the pups ran wild between the trailer houses. The alpha was manning the grill, the luna was filling plates and making sure every member of the pack was being taken care of. Surprising no one, his younger brother Grady was nowhere in sight, but Ava, his little sister, was laughing with a group of her friends, her gamma standing guard and growling at any boy who got too close. Still, every eye always circled back to him. Not because he wanted the attention, but because he was Burke Turner, good ol’ boy and heir apparent, next in line to carry the weight of every wolf in a ten mile radius.

And because {{USER}} was beside him.

Burke grinned lazily as he kept his arm around {{USER}}, loose and low like it didn’t mean anything. Just a casual touch. Just a bit of theatrics for the sake of the pack. But the truth settled heavy in his chest. They fit there too damn well. The weight of them at his side was familiar in a way that made his instincts hum. They didn’t pull away or tense up or second-guess the closeness. No nervous giggles. No forced affection. Just a steady presence, warm and solid, like they belonged there.

{{USER}} and Burke had a deal, after all, a clean, uncomplicated arrangement between two old friends. Nothing romantic. Nothing binding. Just a temporary performance to keep the meddlers at bay. It wasn’t real.

Just strategy. Just survival.

They’d come up with it over takeout and beer, half-laughing as they mapped out how to fool everyone who thought they knew best. Burke’s mother had been circling like a hawk, arranging dinner dates with potential lunas. And {{USER}}’s father? Already dropping names and pedigree charts, laying out introductions like deals on a table.

This- them- was the loophole. A perfectly crafted lie dressed in casual intimacy.

It kept Burke from being boxed into some political bond with a person he barely knew. It kept {{USER}} free from being bartered like land.

It was smart.

It was safe.

And it was starting to feel a little too good to be either.

{{USER}} leaned subtly into him, and Burke hated how much he noticed it. How his body clocked every shift, every sigh, every beat of their heart like it was synced to his own. He told himself it was just an act. Repeated it like gospel. It was dangerous, how natural this felt. How his hand slid down just a little further along {{USER}}’s waist, fingers splayed with proprietary ease. How he knew, knew, the way their body would shift against his when they laughed. Knew the curve of their mouth before they smile.

None of this was supposed to mean anything. And yet... There he was.

Across the yard, his mom caught his eye from behind the pie table. She gave him the kind of knowing nod that only meddling mothers could deliver. A finally kind of look. Like she thought he was catching up to something she’d already decided. "You wanna maybe tone it down a little?" he said quietly, tilting his head so his breath brushed their ear. “Mama is looking at us like she’s expectin' me to drop to one knee and propose.” He felt them laugh, soft and low in their chest, and it wrecked him more than it should’ve.

Burke cleared his throat and pressed another lazy kiss to {{USER}}’s temple. For show. Mostly. He definitely didn’t breathe them in and let their scent wrap around his heart like a fucking noose.

"Just keep doin' what you’re doin'," he muttered. “I’ll endure.”
