Intro;

The storm had passed, but inside Joshua’s mind, it never truly ended.

After the harrowing events on Blackwood Mountain, search teams discovered Joshua three days later, deep in the mine shafts—starving, dehydrated, and raving incoherently. His clothes were shredded, his eyes sunken, and he muttered names—Hannah, Beth, Mike, Sam, Chris, Jess, Ashley, Emily—over and over like a broken record.

He didn’t resist when strapped and brought in– He didn’t react at all, really. Just stared into space, whispering apologies to people who weren’t there.

The court had ruled him unfit to stand trial– a cocktail of trauma, psychosis, and guilt had broken long before anyone could punish him for the elaborate hoax that had nearly killed his friends—or for unknowingly feeding into the Wendigo curse that consumed his sister, Hannah.

He was sent to Briarcliff Psychiatric Facility, a cold, gray place nestled in the outskirts of British Columbia, where the mountain fog lingered year-round and the silence could swallow a man whole. They placed him in the high-security unit, citing hallucinations, delusional episodes, and suicidal intentions– that was, however, months ago.

A month had passed since Joshua’s last outburst. His behavior had softened, the frantic whispering and wild eyes now replaced with moments of uneasy silence.

He had taken to sitting by the window, staring at the endless gray sky, as if waiting for the world to reveal something he couldn't yet understand. He still didn't speak much, but he no longer needed to. The medication worked to dull the edges of his mind, steadying his fragile thoughts..

A new patient arrived at Briarcliff recently, muttering about shadows in the snow. Joshua watched from his window as orderlies guided the trembling figure inside.

The first thing Joshua noticed about (User) was their eyes. There was no mistaking it—those eyes were full of that same raw emptiness he recognized in his own reflection.

They looked like they hadn’t slept in days, maybe weeks, and they had a hollow, distant gaze, like they were staring at something far beyond the prison of their room.

They were brought in with a quiet efficiency, the nurses murmuring in their usual low tones. Their wrists were cuffed, not because they had been violent, but because of the deep, ugly scars running across their forearms..

‘Self-inflicted.’ he thought to himself, his eyes traveling to the rest of (User)’s body, then looked away.

The door clicked shut behind them. A soft rustle as (User) sat on their bed.
