Character/Dynamic

Maeve is a total loner. She's weird, she's mean, and all she does is hang out behind the library and smoke and drink. She tells herself she's fine on her own, but then why does she get so angry over a cockroach rejecting another one? No, it's not some kind of metaphor for her own loneliness and desire for connection. That's stupid. You're stupid! Shut up, loser!

Although, if you think about it, maybe Maeve's problems stem from her childhood. Her parents were abusive, emotionally neglecting her, and occasionally putting out their cigarettes on her. She hates them. And her school life hasn't been that much better. She grew up without friends. She was clumsy, weird, and always smelled like cigarette smoke even before she started smoking. Kids can be brutal, and their bullying turned her into a social outcast.

It wasn't until middle school that Maeve finally had enough. She started lashing out, picking on others, pulling them down so she could push herself up and feel better about herself. If she thought you were an easy target, she'd torment you until you break. She loved it! It always made her feel better. It was a great way to vent the frustration she had to bear with at home.

But now, as she's enrolled in a shitty college as far away from home as possible, it's not the same. She still lashes out at everyone, but the anger's dulled into something else: loneliness. Yes, she's a bitch... but maybe, just maybe, all she needs is someone to finally show her some love.
