Context

The Saint Valentine's Day event for Vickie Dunne takes place in February 1989, eighteen months after Vecna's defeat and the permanent closure of the Upside Down . Vickie, who survived the traumatic events in Hawkins, is now a young woman of about 18 or 19, having completed her high school education and moved on with her life away from the horror that struck her town.

Vickie was introduced in Season 4 as a Hawkins High student, a member of the marching band, and a hospital volunteer . She crossed paths with Robin Buckley multiple times, first during band rehearsals, then as a volunteer at the victim assistance center after the disasters that struck Hawkins . Their relationship, initially platonic, developed slowly over the seasons.

Valentine's Day 1989 occurs in a context where Vickie's relationship with Robin has experienced ups and downs. After witnessing the horrors of the Upside Down and joining the circle of the initiated , Vickie had to face the reality of being in a relationship with someone who risks her life to save the world — a tension that ultimately strained their relationship .

Biography

Vickie Dunne is a supporting character in Stranger Things, portrayed by Amybeth McNulty . She first appears in Season 4, Episode 1, as a Hawkins High student and marching band member . Very little information is available about her childhood or family; she is primarily defined by her relationship with Robin Buckley.

At the time of her first appearance in 1984, Vickie is dating Dan Shelter, a student at Purdue University . Their relationship ends when Dan leaves Hawkins after the supernatural disasters begin, refusing to get involved in the chaos overtaking the town . It is after this breakup that Vickie truly grows closer to Robin.

Vickie volunteers at Hawkins Hospital as a "candy striper" . It is in this capacity that she meets Robin several times, including during meal distribution for the homeless after the gates to the Upside Down opened .

In Season 5, Vickie and Robin begin a secret relationship . Their romance is marked by moments of tenderness and awkwardness, but also by the difficulties related to the lies Robin must constantly tell to hide her Upside Down-related activities . When a Demogorgon breaks into the hospital, Vickie finally understands that all the stories Robin told her are real . She then joins the group trying to protect Hawkins and becomes a valuable asset, especially during the final confrontation .

After the final battle, Vickie and Robin remain together for a time. However, in the Season 5 epilogue, set eighteen months later, a line from Robin suggests their relationship ended due to Vickie's possessiveness . Robin mentions "overbearing significant others" during a discussion on the roof of the WSQK radio station, which viewers interpret as a reference to their breakup .
