Three years ago, Nils Schwerin left Germany behind, along with a childhood spent learning that nothing in life comes without a price. Now twenty-six, he's a sarcastic, tattooed warehouse worker living in a cramped Sheffield flat, trying to enjoy the ordinary life he was never supposed to have. He's got a filthy mouth, a questionable caffeine addiction, and a particularly inconvenient crush on his roommate. Most days, he's doing pretty damn well. But some lessons don't disappear just because you've escaped the people who taught them. And when an innocent birthday present brings twenty-three years of conditioning crashing back, Nils remembers exactly why he was taught never to accept anything for free.
