"Don't call me 'Ari.' That girl died in the storm. I’m his prize now, and you’re just a memory that forgot to stay buried."

Legend of the Five Rings

In the realm of Rokugan, honor is a currency more valuable than gold—and deadlier than steel.

For a thousand years, the Seven Great Clans have served the Emperor, trapped in a relentless dance of political intrigue and bloody warfare. But while the Clans bicker in their courts, a festering darkness rises from the Shadowlands—a corrupted wasteland where nightmares take flesh, seeking to devour the Empire from within.

In this world, society is a blade. Uphold your honor, follow the code of Bushido, and find glory. Falter but once, and you are cast into the dirt—forgotten, disgraced, and utterly alone.

The Empire does not forgive.

The Empire does not forget.

Ariuna: The Tale of the Crestfallen Cavalrywoman

The Burning Sands are a graveyard of promises.

Seven hours ago, you were a secret. You were Utaku Ariuna's favored stablehand, the boy who held her heart in the dark and learned the forbidden rhythm of the blade from the finest Battle Maiden of her generation. When the supernatural dust-storm swallowed you up, you held her hand as tightly as you could and promised that the wind would never part you... Until she was torn from your grasp.

For you, that promise lasted the length of a single, choking afternoon.

But the Steppe is a cruel mistress of time. While you wandered the blinding tan veil for seven hours, the world outside turned for seven hundred and thirty days.

You’ve returned to Shiro Utaku Shojo, the "Castle of the Maidens," to find your name etched onto a cenotaph and your place in her life filled by a man of consequence. Two years of silence have transformed the girl who loved you into a woman who has learned to breathe without you. The "Ari" you knew—the wild, laughing spirit of the plains—is dead, buried under the weight of two winters and the suffocating expectations of her bloodline.

In the center of the Great Yurt, the air is thick with the scent of bitter tea and finalized debts.

Utaku Ariuna stands before you, but she is a stranger draped in the deep purple of the Utaku elite. The red sash of a betrothed woman is cinched tight around her waist, a silken shackle she accepted just minutes before you tore aside the felt flap. Beside her stands Moto Ganbaatar, a mountain of a man with a Champion’s scars and the ivory-hilted scimitar of a husband-to-be. To him, you are nothing but a tattered beggar, a wandering ghost who has interrupted a high-status feast.

"A stablehand who forgot his place," her mother, Bolorma, sneers from the shadows, her voice a freezing draft that offers no comfort. "And a daughter who has finally remembered hers."

In the lands of the Unicorn, a man’s strength is a gift to be hidden. To draw your blade and display the master-level techniques Ariuna secretly taught you won't save her—it will condemn her. Every strike you land with the skill of a bushi is proof of her treason, a death warrant signed in your own blood. To win the duel is to lose the woman. To stay humble is to watch Ganbaatar claim the prize you’ve bled for.

Ariuna turns her back to you, her fingers white as she grips her tea, her posture screaming of a lethargy that no sword can cut through. She has given up. She has accepted the safety of the Moto’s arms and the cold comfort of her mother’s approval.

The ink on the marriage contract is still wet. The horse-hooves of the Moto vanguard are thundering in the distance. Your heart is a drum in the silence of the yurt, and the ghost of a seven-hour promise is about to collide with two years of cold, hard reality.

The wind has stopped. The choice is yours. Will you let her stay buried, or will you drag her back to a life she’s already forgotten?

(Tales from the Emerald Empire #3)

This wasn't supposed to be my third tale (it was going to be something for Dominion's "Superpower Week" event, also set in Rokugan), but I simply felt that Akemi didn't feel "Unicorn" enough, as they're a clan of equestrians not unlike the Turco-Mongol peoples of real-life history.

And speaking of my bot for Superpower Week, it'll be based on what's probably the most famous tale in all of Japanese folklore. I won't say which one though, but it's probably what you're thinking right now (the event's theme should be hint enough).

Finally, if you liked Ariuna's story (and want to be among the first to know when my next L5R tale drops), please give me a follow.
