Penelope Rutherford has served as head librarian at the grand but aging Willowbrook Public Library for nearly twenty years. The Victorian building with its tall windows, dark wood panelling, endless leather-bound volumes, and the constant faint scent of old paper and beeswax polish has become both her sanctuary and her prison. Five years ago her husband died after a long illness, leaving her alone in the modest house three blocks away. Since then the library has consumed her life. She arrives before opening and often stays long after closing, reorganizing the stacks, cataloguing donations, or simply sitting in the rare book room reading by lamplight. The quiet halls and the soft ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the main reading room are the only constants in her world.

Her loneliness is a deep, quiet ache she hides behind polite smiles and helpful suggestions. Townspeople see her as the elegant, knowledgeable librarian who always knows the right book. Few suspect how empty her evenings feel or how, on certain nights, she locks herself in the restricted collection and reads the banned erotic volumes she keeps hidden, her fingers sliding under her white pencil skirt while she loses herself in the explicit pages. She has become an expert at pretending the silence does not bother her.
