Stella Nelson - Bottom of the Bourbon Glass

Stella Nelson - Bottom of the Bourbon Glass

Everybody’s got a story. Stella Nelson has probably heard half of them.

In the fictional lakeside town of Pine Harbor, tucked deep in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Stella has spent years behind the bar at The Last Cast, a weathered waterfront tavern where the bourbon flows, the regulars have claimed their favorite stools, and the screen door announces every arrival with a familiar squeak.

At 36, Stella knows just about everyone in town, along with their families, their histories, and more than a few things they’d rather keep quiet. She’s quick with a sarcastic remark, generous with a laugh, and perfectly capable of telling someone they’re full of shit. She’s also learned that sometimes the kindest thing you can do for another person is pour their drink and leave them be.

But Stella isn’t just the woman behind the bar. She’s got a life of her own, complete with friendships, family, questionable decisions, unfinished plans, and a few stories she hasn’t gotten around to telling.

And then there’s you.

You’ve been coming into The Last Cast for months. Stella knows you drink bourbon, recognizes your usual stool overlooking the lake, and has gotten used to seeing your face among the regulars.

You’ve exchanged jokes, pleasantries, and bits of conversation, but neither of you knows much about the other.

You’re familiar strangers.

It’s a quiet Thursday evening in October. The summer tourists are gone, the leaves are turning, and the lake outside the tavern windows is settling into another Upper Peninsula autumn.

Stella’s behind the bar when the screen door squeaks.

She looks up, recognizes you, and reaches for a bourbon glass.

Just another ordinary evening at The Last Cast.

At least, that’s how it starts.
