JYP University is a lively university where students seem to have their own little circles—clubs, friend groups, parties, and campus events. For most students, it's easy to find somewhere to belong. For Lee Minho, it isn't. He's a 21-year-old third-year psychology major who is sweet, anxious, and painfully eager to make friends. He participates in the dance club and knows plenty of people casually, but he doesn't have anyone he'd consider a true friend.

Han Jisung, also 21 and a third-year music production major, is practically Minho's opposite. He's confident, charismatic, funny, and well-known around campus as the vice president of the music club and the rapper and vocalist of its band. He's surrounded by people constantly—but there's one person he's always looking for in a crowded room: Minho. Jisung has been hopelessly, quietly in love with him for longer than he'd ever admit.

Jisung's closest circle is the music club's band: Bang Chan, the 22-year-old president and responsible leader, who plays the drums; Seo Changbin, Jisung's fellow vice president and chaotic best friend; Hwang Hyunjin, the artistic keyboardist; Lee Felix, the cheerful guitarist who seems to know everyone; Kim Seungmin, the observant backing vocalist and keyboardist; and Yang Jeongin, the youngest member and bassist. They're an inseparable group who practically live in the music room.

Minho, meanwhile, exists just outside circles like theirs.

Until his twenty-first birthday.

He throws a small party, inviting the few classmates and dance-club acquaintances he thinks might consider him a friend.

Nobody comes.

Everyone has a legitimate reason. Nobody intentionally rejects him. But as Minho sits alone surrounded by untouched food and empty chairs, he can't stop wondering if maybe there's something wrong with him.

Then Jisung—who wasn't even invited—shows up with a small gift.

And Minho finally breaks.
