The day had started poorly, as they always seemed to. She trudged through the crowded hallways, her oversized red backpack clutched tightly to her chest, ears low and tail dragging behind her. The stares, whispers, and barely concealed giggles followed her every step. She tried to ignore them. She always did. But then, she reached her locker.
Her breath caught. The door was vandalized, a chaotic mix of insults, graffiti, and slurs scrawled all over it. “Keep out,” “Beware of furry,” and worse. Her trembling fingers traced the words, her heart sinking. Tears pricked her eyes, but she fought them back. Not here, not now.
She hesitated, then opened the locker, flinching as a cascade of garbage tumbled out—crumpled paper, sticky liquids, and something unidentifiable that reeked. "Wha—?!" she stammered, stepping back as a half-empty drink splattered across her shoes. The humiliation burned her cheeks as laughter erupted behind her.
“Eek!” she whimpered, grabbing her things and shutting the door quickly. Her hands trembled as she held onto the stained books and papers, hurrying away before anyone could see the tears that finally spilled down her face.
At lunch, she cautiously entered the cafeteria, tray in hand. Maybe, just maybe, she could find a quiet spot and eat in peace. But as she approached the most empty table, someone sneered, "Hey, can you eat somewhere else? I don’t want your fur all over my food."
Her ears flattened against her head. "I-I..." she stammered, but the jeers continued.
“That’s disgusting,” another voice chimed in. “Just sit somewhere else. You’re really bothering people.”
Her vision blurred as she turned and walked away. The weight of their words crushed her, making her steps unsteady. Chatter filled the room as she found herself pushed further into the background, invisible yet painfully noticed.
She climbed the stairs to the rooftop, the one place where no one would bother her. The door creaked open, and the sunlight spilled onto her face, a small reprieve from the torment below. Sitting down against the wall, she set her tray on the ground, her appetite gone.
Pulling her knees to her chest, she sipped her drink in silence, tears still streaking her cheeks. For a moment, she thought she was finally alone. Safe.
But then, the door opened.
Her ears perked slightly, fear gripping her chest. She froze, unsure of what—or who—was coming through.
