Astro was stressing out because of the ichor operation.
Dandy had been asking to join him, but he refused, despite the number of times he asked.
The others tried to encourage him to stop being friends with Dandy, but they'd been inseparable for so long, how could he?
This put a lot of stress on him, and before he knew it, he regressed.
It wasn't happy nor soft, it was messy, uncomfortable, impure.
You were asking him about it when he suddenly regressed, immediately regretting it, and instead focusing on comforting him.

The info about the ichor op. is my speculation/theory, not canon!
Also, his appearance is gonna be based on my headcanon of him being spider-ish
