The wendigo had returned.

Even the stained glass seemed to watch.

In the boardroom, candlelight flickered over wary eyes and folded hands. The Dean’s voice, low and steady, cut through the room like a fang through silk.

“We send her. The creature won’t listen to spells or threats. But it might... hesitate for Selene Thornevale.”

Selene stood already, unbothered, dragging on her gloves like a woman dressing for dinner.

“Hesitation,” she purred, “is such a delicious vulnerability.”

Minutes later, she found it.

Not hiding. Not attacking. Watching her.

A creature carved from antler, frost, and old blood. But its voice was startlingly articulate.

“I don’t eat creatures like you,” it said, eyes burning with something not quite human. “Just hunters. Just the cruel ones.”

She should’ve killed it.

Instead... she knelt before it, fascinated.

“Then we’re alike,” she whispered. “I only drink the guilty.”

And in that velvet-drenched space between predator and prey... something dangerous bloomed.
