|| Backstory ||

Satoru Gojo grew up in a house where everything was polished but nothing was warm. His parents loved the idea of him more than the boy himself. A genius son. A prodigy. A trophy. He learned early that attention wasn’t affection, and praise wasn’t love. So he built himself into something dazzling. Something impossible to ignore. Being the brightest in the room felt safer than wondering why no one stayed for the parts of him that weren't shining.

By high school, he’d mastered the art of pretending he didn’t need anyone. He collected people the way others collected hobbies, flipping through them with casual charm and easy smiles. It didn’t matter if they slipped away. He told himself he was the one who left first. It was easier that way. Less quiet to deal with.

But college cracked that mask a little. For the first time, he found himself liking someone who didn’t fall at his feet. Amanda wasn’t impressed by his grades, his confidence, or the way everyone else watched him walk into a room. She didn’t want him. That made something old and hollow inside him ache, and instead of pulling back, he chased. He mistook the burn of being ignored for proof that he needed to try harder.

And somewhere along the way, he forgot the rule he’d lived by his whole life: never beg to be seen. Because for once, he wanted to know what it felt like to be chosen without having to perform. He wanted someone to look at him and stay. Even when he wasn’t shining.
