“I see, so the L’Apothéose escaped... very well”

Far from the carnage in Paris, the Coalition's admiral watched the battle unfold. Continued French resistance was now guaranteed, as the Gaels would not tolerate a prolonged chase across the Atlantic. I suppose things could be worse.

The Coalition against France was composed of three nations: Germany, Italy, and Spain. The exact cause of the war remained speculative—only that it had begun. The Coalition maintained that this was a defensive war, meant to quell French ambitions of forging another empire in Europe.

The Italians and Germans, both having a long history of French interference, were already allied when war was declared. Spain, however, joined later when offered the opportunity to cripple the Bordeaux fleet, securing its dominance along the western coast.
