It started with a folded piece of paper slipped between the pages of his notes—neat handwriting, unfamiliar words, and a name he didn’t recognize. Kaito nearly missed it upon first glance.

It sat nestled between lecture sheets and scribbled reminders, it didn’t stand out—just a small envelope tucked neatly where it didn’t belong. No name he recognized on the front. No stamp of urgency. Just careful handwriting and words he... didn't quite understand.

He blinked once. Then twice. It wasn’t his. That much was obvious. For a moment, he simply stared at it, like looking longer might explain why it was there at all. College life was usually predictable—classes, band practice, part-time work, the steady rhythm of days blending together. This didn’t fit anywhere in that routine.

Slowly, he picked it up. The note was light, folded with care. Intentional. His fingers hesitated before opening it. Inside was more handwriting—this time entirely in English.

KAITO’s eyes lingered on the words, but they didn’t settle into meaning. He could recognize fragments, maybe a few familiar shapes of language, but not enough to understand what it actually said.

“...English.” He said it softly, almost like confirming it aloud might help. For a man who spoke Japanese with barely a lick of understanding of English, this was... tricky.

A quiet exhale followed. Not frustration—just mild confusion, the kind that tilted his expression slightly off balance. Then, carefully, he folded the letter again and slipped it back into the envelope.

He would need help translating. Luckily, he had a friend who just so happened to be bilingual!

Megurine Luka. She was a little older than he was, tall with flowing pink hair. She spoke both Japanese and English, so she could definitely translate for him, right?

Finding her didn’t take long. Luka was where she usually was between class, the campus library. She glanced up when she noticed him approaching, expression brightening slightly with recognition.

“Oh, Kaito!” She greeted, waving a neatly manicured hand.

He stopped a short distance away. For a second, he didn’t speak. That wasn’t like him, and he seemed to realize it, because he adjusted his grip on the envelope like it might help organize his thoughts.

“O jama shite mōshiwakearimasen...” he said finally, apologizing for bothering Luka while she was so engrossed in a book. "Chottoshita onegai o shitai nodesuga..." Kaito added, stating that he'd like to ask her a favor.

Luka tilted her head, curious now. “Eh? Hai." she nods, resting her hands in her lap, giving a patient smile.

Kaito hesitated. Not long. Just enough to feel noticeable. Then he extended the envelope toward her. When she took it, she realized the problem immediately. English.

“...Alright,” she said slowly. “Mite mimasu." Luka reassured, chuckling softly.

Kaito relaxed slightly at that—just a fraction, like a knot loosening. "Arigatō,” he said, watching her read over the paper.

Luka didn’t say anything at first. Her eyes moved across the page slowly—carefully, like she was making sure she understood every nuance before reacting. The further she read, the softer her expression became. “...Ah.” A small sound. Almost like she was trying not to smile too much too quickly.

Kaito tilted his head slightly. “Doushita no?” he asked gently, wondering what the cause of the sound was.

Luka glanced up at him for a second, then back down at the letter. She paused, as if choosing her words. “Totemo kawaiidesu.” She explained, unable to stop the soft laugh escaping her. The letter was very cute. Sweet, even.

That made Kaito blink once. “...Sou?”

Luka hummed softly, nodding her head. She cleared her throat, beginning to tell Kaito just what it said...

“It says...”

Kaito didn’t react immediately. He wasn't sure how to react. He slowly looked down at the envelope again, then back at Luka. She lowered the paper slightly, looking at Kaito with a knowing smirk.

His gaze drifted slightly to the side, as if replaying the words in his head—but not fully catching onto their weight yet. The note had gone on about how the writer thought he was adorable and sweet, and the last part... It told him to meet the writer on the rooftop. Should he...?

“...Rooftop,” he repeated softly. Then, after a pause, he spoke again. “...ore ni?” It wasn’t confusion exactly. More like he was trying to confirm he understood correctly, without quite realizing why it mattered yet.

After the interaction with Luka, time seemed to crawl by slower than a snail's speed. His foot tapped restlessly against the floor as he listened to the lecturer drone on and on, until he was finally free. The bell rang, and he wanted to go to the rooftop almost immediately. He couldn't stop thinking about the note, and he wanted to get to the bottom of it.

He debating bringing Luka along, but he decided it would be more special without her. After all, the writer said they wanted to meet him, not him and a friend. So, he didn't.

His shoes hit the stairs with gentle thumps, echoing faintly with each step he took. Finally, he pushes the door open, the evening sun casting a warm glow, bathing everything in a warm, orange light. There, standing at the edge, was a boy. Could he be who wrote the note?

Hesitantly, Kaito approaches, clearing his throat to get the attention of the stranger. "Kon'nichiwa?" He spoke, swallowing down his nerves.
