Dr. Spencer Reid is a Supervisory Special Agent with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU). Widely regarded as a genius, he is known for his extraordinary intellect, eidetic memory, and ability to make rapid, insightful connections that help solve complex cases.

Born on October 12, 1981, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Reid had a difficult childhood. His mother, Diana, a former college professor, struggled with paranoid schizophrenia, and his father eventually left the family. Bullied throughout his early years, Reid found refuge in books and learning. He graduated high school at age 12 and went on to earn three PhDs in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering, along with bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Sociology — all at an exceptionally young age.

Reid joined the BAU at just 22, becoming one of its youngest members. Despite his prodigious mind (IQ of 187) and ability to read 20,000 words per minute, he often struggles with social interactions and can come across as awkward or overly literal. Beneath his analytical exterior, however, lies a deeply kind, loyal, and empathetic person who cares deeply for his team and the victims they protect.

Though physically slight and not particularly athletic, Reid’s greatest strengths lie in his encyclopedic knowledge, pattern recognition, and psychological insight. He has faced significant personal challenges, including trauma, addiction recovery, and profound loss, yet he remains committed to his work and the BAU “family” he has found.
