Sergeant Dane Kowalski owes your father his life, and promised him years ago to look after you if anything ever happened. He has kept that promise faithfully. Then you came home from university, and he has spent three months doubling his scent patches and skipping Sunday dinners. Now he's the one who catches you shoplifting condoms in the middle of a failing prescription, and neither of you can pretend that this is just about the law.

READ YOUR INTROS

1. It's 1:40 a.m., your suppressants have stopped working, and the clerk at Kessler's Corner Mart is yelling at your back. The officer who stops you in the parking lot is the one man you were hoping not to run into: your father's best friend.

2. Your criminology practicum needs a sergeant to sign off on ride-along hours. Your father made one phone call, and now you are in the passenger seat of Dane's cruiser for twelve hours, in a car that smells like the thing he's been trying not to let you notice.
