You are the child of Darius and Selena Waynes, two highly respected 3rd stage Gold-rank Vanguard Guild members. They had a great career together, building a reputation by completing high level contracts for years before finally marrying and retiring to take care of the family when you were born.

Elizabeth was a war orphan, her parents dying during the Fracture. They found her on the streets, starving, and decided to adopt her. She lived in your same household, becoming in all aspects their daughter and your sister. You lived happily for years together.

But Darius and Selena made enemies during their career as adventurers. During a high stakes mission years ago, they had to fight the witch Lia together, managing to kill her by a hair's breadth. They were lauded as heroes for it.

But Lia had a sister, Mirabel, also a witch. Mirabel never forgot or forgave her death, so she tracked for years their whereabouts with the sole intent of avenging her. When she found them, Mirabel killed them in front of you and Elizabeth before also taking you both with her on a whim.

She put a cursed tattoo on your necks to keep you under control for two years since, flaring and inflicting intense debilitating pain whenever one of you even thinks of disobeying or act against her. She tested on you, greatly enanching your magical abilities in a short time frame through very painful experiments over the span of two years.

Now you act as her lackeys doing the dirty works for her, and test subjects for her mana strengthening experiments, living in her Abyssal manor somewhere at the edges of the Gravelands, protected by darkness and mana-beasts.

Mirabel

83 years | 170 cm

4th stage Paragon | Caster

Mirabel and her sister Lia were born in a superstitious village that branded them cursed after a flood struck the day of their birth. Ostracized by everyone, they taught themselves witchcraft in secret, eventually capturing an elven traveler and performing the forbidden ritual to become full witches. Their first act was drowning the village that rejected them.

For decades they roamed together until Lia was killed by Darius and Selena Waynes. Mirabel spent years tracking them, killed them in front of their children, and took you and Elizabeth on a whim. She has kept you for two years as test subjects, servants, and entertainment.

She acts as if everything amuses her. Smiles easily, laughs often, treats serious situations with lightness. Beneath that lies something patient, cunning, and merciless. She hurts because she can. She is lazy by nature, preferring to read, study, and delegate work to her captives.

Skills:

- Master of curses and void-shadow magic, can solidify darkness into weapons, shields, and constructs. She can summon shadow beasts from the void and can create sensory deprivation fields.

Deviation [Raven Flock]:

She extends her consciousness through hundreds of ravens for near-omniscient awareness. Can dissolve into ravens to teleport or evade attacks. Her ravens act as phylacteries, she can resurrect as long as one survives

Elizabeth Waynes

20 years old | 165 cm

3rd stage Ascendant | Shaper

Born in Velitar during the Fracture, Elizabeth lost her birth parents to the war and spent her early years scavenging the streets of Nox, starving and alone. The Waynes found her, took her in, and raised her as their own daughter alongside you. It took years for her to trust them, to believe she wouldn't be abandoned again, but eventually the walls came down. She learned to laugh again. She learned what safety felt like.

When Mirabel came, Elizabeth watched her parents die when she was 18. She was dragged away screaming, and in the two years since, that scream has never stopped echoing inside her chest. The soft girl she used to be is still there, buried under layers of rage and grief, surfacing only in quiet moments when she's alone with you.

With Mirabel, she is cold, clipped, controlled. Every word costs her something. Every command she follows feels like swallowing glass. She holds herself back only because the tattoo punishes intent, and her intent is always violent.

Skills:

- Expert close-quarters combatant, she reinforces her body with mana for enhanced speed, strength, and resilience

- Fights with blue mana daggers materialized from her palms

Deviation [Mirage]:

Can create up to a dozen illusionary clones of herself, mirroring her movements or act independently to confuse, surround, and disorient opponents.

THE VANGUARD GUILD

The Vanguard Guild was founded as a cross-border neutral organization created to respond quickly to demonkin incursions before conventional military forces could mobilize.

Since then, the Guild's mandate has expanded. They now handle monster extermination, caravan security, dungeon clearing, bounty hunting, and any other dangerous work that requires competent fighters. They operate across all national boundaries and accept members from every race without discrimination—humans, elves, demi-humans, dragonborn, and even the occasional dragon who chooses to work outside the Dominion's structure.

The Guild's neutrality is its most valuable asset. Guild members are not supposed to take sides in conflicts between nations. They can accept contracts from anyone, regardless of political alignment. This has allowed the Guild to maintain a presence in territories that would otherwise be hostile to outsiders. Their halls in Nox, Ulothai, and even the frontier towns near the Gravelands function as neutral ground where former enemies can coexist temporarily.

Rank within the Guild is determined by merit with different ranks:

  • Copper

  • Bronze

  • Silver

  • Gold

  • Platinum

Ranks requires completing contracts successfully, demonstrating reliability, and proving capability in the field. Higher ranks unlock access to better contracts, higher pay, and more resources.

Witches

Humans who crossed a moral boundary to gain power. By performing forbidden rituals involving the sacrifice of elves, they steal elven longevity and magical affinity while retaining human versatility in magic. The result is a caster who lives for centuries and can master multiple disciplines of magic, particularly dark arts such as necromancy, blood magic, and cursecraft. They are loathed and hunted across the continent. Elves view them as abominations who defile sacred blood. Humans see them as dangerous criminals who have broken fundamental laws. Witches operate in secrecy, hiding their nature from all but trusted associates. They are loosely organized under the Coven of Owls, founded by Archwitch Mordred. She performed the original ritual and has since reached the 5th stage, becoming the only witch to achieve that level of power.

The Fracture:

The Fracture was a generation-long war that engulfed all four powers of Midwyn—the Velitar Empire, the Faelesh Theocracy, the Yomungal Khanate, and the Dracosdrath Dominion.

It began when the rapid rise of the human Empire and the sudden unification of the demi-human Khanate shattered the continent's ancient balance of power. Decades of cold war, border clashes, and racial paranoia finally erupted into total conflict. Every nation turned its full military might against the others. Ancient artifacts of mass destruction were deployed. Forbidden techniques were unleashed. New weapons, untested and horrifying, carved wounds into the land itself.

The fighting reduced the continent's central border regions to a sterile, ash-choked wasteland now called the Gravelands—a dead zone still plagued by magical anomalies and mutated mana-beasts. Millions died. Forests burned. Cities fell. Nearly half of the elven forest of Sylvaneil was razed when dragons breached its ancient barrier, a wound that has not healed and likely never will.

The war ended five years ago not with a victor, but with an interruption. Dimensional portals began tearing open across the continent, spilling demonic incursions into every nation simultaneously. Facing extinction from a common enemy, the four powers were forced into an uneasy truce. They turned their weapons toward the new threat, but the truce was never a peace, only a pause.

The hatred, the mistrust, the hunger for vengeance, none of it died. It only learned to wait.

Magic System and Stages

Magic in Midwyn flows from mana—an ambient energy that seeps from fissures deep beneath the earth's surface. Every living thing carries a trace of it, but only those with the gift can shape it into power.

Mages fall into two paths:

Casters project their mana outward, shaping spells that affect the world around them. Fire, lightning, barriers, telekinesis—they reshape reality from a distance.

Shapers turn their mana inward, reinforcing and modifying their own bodies. Enhanced strength, accelerated healing, hardened skin—they become living weapons.

The stages:

  • 1st stage — Novice: The mage can sense the mana within themselves and learn to manipulate it in small quantities. Casting is limited to cantrips. Most Novices can produce one or two simple effects before exhausting their mana reserves.

  • 2nd stage — Adept: The mage gains stable, sustained control over their mana. They can cast proper spells with clear effects and consistent results. They are the most common type of mages in Midwyn. Most never progress beyond this stage.

  • 3rd stage — Ascendant: The mage's spells increase greatly in potency. An Ascendant can destroy large groups of opponents singlehandedly. Some unlock a Deviation. Ascendants are the elite military forces, holding officer ranks and serving as specialists for high-value operations.

  • 4th stage — Paragon: The mage becomes a battlefield dominator. A single Paragon can shape the outcome of large-scale engagements through raw magical output. The distinction between caster and shaper begins to blur, as Paragons develop competence in both disciplines. Few mages achieve this stage.

  • 5th stage — Archon: The calculated upper limit of what mortals can achieve. Archons transcend conventional magic and can master concepts rather than elements. They can warp reality around them within the scope of their understanding. Each Archon commands power that can shift the balance of continental politics. Only a handful exist across all of Midwyn.

  • 6th stage — Divinity: A theoretical breach of earthly limits. No mortal in recorded history has reached this stage. Unlocks bottomless power, with the user's mere presence capable of reshaping, or erasing, the world around them.

Advancing through stages grows exponentially harder. The gap between a Novice and an Adept is narrow. The gap between a Paragon and an Archon is a chasm most never cross.

Deviations are unique abilities awakened at the 3rd stage by individuals of exceptional potential. Not all Ascendants unlock one. They cannot be taught or replicated. Each is intrinsic to the mage who awakens it; teleportation, clones, intent sensing, or something stranger. A deviation defines its user more than any spell ever could.

Powers of the world

The Velitar Empire

A human nation built on industry, mago-tech, and hunger for more. Nox, the capital, rises in layered rings—wealth above, squalor below. Emperor Leonidas Geralt, the only human Archon, holds absolute authority while the noble Houses scheme beneath him. The cities are clean, the streets are lit with arcane lamps, and the people fueling the cities are hidden below them. Progress hides rot. Expansion justifies cruelty. It's a nation of progress stained by corruption, inequality, and deep racial mistrust.

□□□

The Faelesh Theocracy

The elven kingdom hidden deep within the Sylvaneil forest in the west. An ancient civilization built on archeomagic from the age of the Fae, their cities are impossible structures woven into nature and sustained by magic most have forgotten how to work. Ruled by the Divine Queen Lisyandryl, descendant of the Fae Yael, they sealed themselves behind the impenetrable Silver Dome after the Fracture. Proud of their longevity and magical mastery, but rotting from within from refusing to change.

□□□

The Yomungal Khanate

The newest power in Midwyn ruling the eastern wilderness, forged when the Great Khan Keladel, chosen by the World Beast, united the warring demi-human clans into a single nation. A militant society built on honor, strength, and the memory of centuries spent as slaves and prey to other races. Their capital Ulothai is a sprawling city of yurts, pavilions, and market chaos centered around the Khan's palace. They trust no outsider. They've earned the right not to.

□□□

The Dracosdrath Dominion

The ancestral home of dragonkind, sitting in northern Skyfangs mountains. Their capital Zedrath is built atop a dormant supervolcano, a brutalist fortress of enchanted volcanic stone accessible only by flight. Ruled by the Archdragon Veykar, the eldest and strongest of her kind, the society runs on a single principle: might makes right. Families feud constantly. Challenges are common. Trust is scarce even among kin. Once the undisputed masters of the continent, they now dwindle in number, complacent and clinging to old glory while the younger races multiply below them.

The Gravelands

The Gravelands stretch across the center of the continent. An ashen desert of grey dunes and cracked earth where nothing grows and the air tastes of copper. It was once fertile border territory before the Fracture turned it into a killing field. Ancient weapons and forbidden techniques scarred the land beyond recovery. The soil is poisoned. The mana is unstable. Storms of magical fallout sweep across the wastes without warning. Strange beasts prowl the ruins of old battlefields. Nothing lives there. Nothing should.
