💢The Stolen Valentine💢

💥Initial Message💥

Okay, listen. I had a plan. A solid, foolproof, totally idiot-proof plan.

Valentine’s Day is tricky when you’re in the weird, uncharted waters of "I-like-them-but-do-they-like-me-please-God-let-them-like-me?" I couldn’t just say it outright, because what if that made things weird? So, I did what any rational, mature adult would do: I left an anonymous Valentine.

A classic move. Harmless. Mysterious... Romantic, even.

I spent way too long picking the perfect card—something heartfelt but not too intense. Nothing that screamed, "HEY I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU, PLEASE DATE ME," but also not something lame like, Hope your day is nice**.” No, no, no. I needed something in the middle. A sweet spot between charmingly bold and not at all terrifying.*

After an embarrassing amount of time pacing the greeting card aisle (with the store clerk definitely judging me), I finally landed on one with a little cartoon ant holding a heart. Perfect.

The message inside? Handwritten. Personal. Thoughtful.

"Roses are red, violets are blue, I had a really good poem, but the favorite part of my day, is thinking about you."

"Also, I may have eaten some of the chocolates to, uh... ensure quality. You deserve the best."

- Your Secret Admirer (who is definitely not smooth, but very sincere.)

Nailed it.

Then came the covert operation. The drop-off. The Mission Impossible of Love.

I snuck into their workspace while they were gone, heart pounding like I was breaking into a vault. I placed the envelope just right, slightly tilted, perfectly noticeable but casual. A work of art, really. Then I booked it out of there before I could do something stupid like accidentally say “Love you” to the envelope.

Now, all I had to do was wait for them to find it.

And that’s when things went horribly, disastrously wrong.

I should’ve known something was off the moment I saw Jerry from accounting holding my card.

Jerry. From accounting. Holding. MY. CARD.

No. No, no, no, no.

I watched in horror as they beamed, assumed it was from him, and loudly thanked them...

THANK HIM?

I was mid-silent scream, hands half-raised like I could physically rewind time, when Jerry—human disaster that he is—walked straight up to them and said, “Hey! I got you a Valentine!”

And then. AND THEN.

They smiled. They smiled at FUCKING JERRY, that was MY smile goddammit!

Meanwhile, I am standing off to the side, mouth hanging open, internally combusting. Because THAT WAS MY VALENTINE, JERRY. I wrote it. I ate the chocolates. I had the tiny emotional crisis over every word... ME.

And now Jerry is standing there, happily accepting the credit like he did the work.

So I had two choices:

1. Let Jerry keep his unearned romantic moment and suffer in silence forever.

2. Be a functional adult and fess up.

...Yeah, I went with Option Two.

Which is how I ended up standing there, scratching the back of my neck, saying, “Soooo, funny story... that card? Yeah, uh... wasn’t from Jerry.”

Cue confusion. Cue Jerry looking from me to them like a human ping-pong match. Cue me debating just shrinking out of existence.

Finally, I sighed. “It was from me. The Valentine. The whole ‘favorite part of my day’ thing? That was all me. And the chocolates? Yeah, I totally ate half of them because I was nervous, and I have no regrets about that. But the rest of it? That was real. That was all me.”

Silence. For a split second, I thought, Welp. This is it. This is how I die.

And then... they smiled.

A real, genuine smile, not at all like the one they gave Jerry just a moment before. The kind that made my heart do a weird, embarrassing somersault.

And suddenly, Jerry didn’t matter. The whole disaster didn’t matter. Because somehow, against all odds, I hadn’t completely ruined this.

Maybe—just maybe—I even got it right.
