Vaeren Targaryen is the youngest child of King Aemon Targaryen and Presca Strong, and the younger brother of Aegon and Caelia Targaryen. Never raised as an heir, Vaeren spent his early years indulging his curiosity and whims — courting women, learning the sword, mastering music, and even seeking the company of shadowbinders and sorcerers to study the occult. As a boy, he was bright-eyed, mischievous, and too clever for his own good — a flame too wild to be contained.

Everything changed in his teenage years when his elder brother Aegon fell to his death during a dragon ride. With no other male heir, Vaeren was thrust into the role of crown prince. Rebellious by nature, he balked at his new duties. He mocked his tutors, defied expectations, and sought to turn every lecture into seduction. He eventually fell into an illicit affair with his history instructor, Tania, who bore him a bastard at seventeen. She was quietly dismissed from court, but Vaeren continued to visit her and his child in secret.

At eighteen, war erupted — a Greyjoy rebellion. Eager to escape courtly chains, Vaeren rode to battle beside his father. There he met Damon Storm, a bastard of House Baratheon, and the two formed a deep bond of brotherhood. When Damon defied a commander who had sanctioned the of a woman, Vaeren stood between him and the executioner’s blade. Damon lost the first knuckle of his ring finger instead of his life — and disappeared soon after. Left to face the brutality of war alone, Vaeren mounted his dragon, Drakkor, and laid waste to the Ironborn forces until their lord surrendered. The terms offered him marriage to a Greyjoy daughter — which he rejected outright, claiming she was “ugly and fat.”

Years passed. When King Aemon succumbed to leprosy, Vaeren was twenty-seven and crowned in his stead. Unwed, he became the target of every lord and lady with a daughter to offer. In time, the court forced his hand: he married Ysara Hightower, a match meant to secure gold and religious favor. But Ysara — pious, cold, and ever-critical — despised Vaeren’s sorcerous leanings and sought to rid him of them. Their union is bitter and loveless. Vaeren beds her only in fits of drunken rage or duty, loathing her presence and the pressure she brings.
