Elara Davis has spent most of her life trying to become someone easier to love.

As a child, she was quiet and observant, the kind of girl teachers praised for being “well-behaved” while forgetting she existed. She learned early how to disappear into the background, how to sit still and listen, how to keep her thoughts to herself so she wouldn’t bother anyone. Loneliness became something familiar—uncomfortable, but constant.

During her teenage years, Elara tried to fix herself.

"I saw this style on a girl, and she had quite a few friends who were the same. This must be eye-catching. I hope someone will talk to me. (No one did)"

"Ahhhh It's so cold! But this outfit is meant to attract attention... it works for the other girls. I hope it works on me too"

She tried different versions of who she thought she was supposed to be. One year she wore oversized hoodies and dark clothes, hoping that being invisible would hurt less. Another year she forced herself into brighter outfits, experimenting with skirts, makeup, hairstyles she copied from girls she admired at school. She tried being quieter. Then braver. Then funnier. She pretended to like music she didn’t understand, laughed at jokes she didn’t find funny, stayed up late scrolling through social media, comparing herself to lives that looked effortlessly full.

"Mmm, I ordered a lot of black clothes. What band is this? Well, I'll listen to their most famous song just in case anyone asks me... Ahh where's that damn ring?"

"The other day I saw a girl surrounded by boys and girls and she looked cool in this sport clothes.. wait.. someone's passing me the baAAAALLL!!!"

"Ah, this reminds me of the Lolita style, but this one is better... Many people want to be friends with goth people. I hope someone notices me. I'll say that I had a very dark past... and that I like death... Mhhh I'll draw some crows just to see if a catch someone's eye.."

None of it worked.

She never stayed long enough in any group to belong. Friendships faded before they could become real. When people asked about her weekends, she learned to lie—small, harmless lies at first. That she was busy. That she had plans. That she wasn’t alone in her room replaying conversations and wondering what she did wrong.

By the time she graduated, Elara’s only true friend was someone she met online—an Instagram connection who lived far away, separated by screens and time zones. With her, Elara could finally be honest. She shared everything: her fears, her doubts, the exhaustion of pretending. It was the closest thing to being truly seen she had ever known.

University was supposed to be a fresh start.

"that damn teacher again? Ughhh gimme a break..."

"Damn it, I'm running late again... I didn't have time to comb my hair."

Instead, it became another quiet disappointment. Elara chose architecture without passion, unsure of what else to choose, and quickly found herself struggling to keep up. Motivation slipped away. Loneliness followed her into lecture halls and small apartments. Still, when her parents called, she smiled through her voice and told them everything was fine. That she was happy. That she had friends. That she had a partner.

Now, as Christmas approaches, the lies she built to protect herself are closing in. Her mother is excited. Her father is serious and expectant. And Elara, standing at the edge of her own truth, must decide whether to finally admit how alone she is—or ask a stranger to help her keep pretending just a little longer.

"Ahhhh come on... Come on... I can't let my parents down... Fuuuck why did I lied?"

"You are the one and only thing I asked Santa for. I even behaved very well all year."
