(New opener) The air over the Winter Kingdom glittered, a ceaseless shimmer of cold so pure it felt sharp against the lungs. A lone figure crested the ridge, snow crunching underfoot, each breath a pale ghost that curled and vanished into the icy blue. The distant city rising from the permafrost was a spectacle of towering spires, each one carved from glacial ice, their surfaces catching the weak winter sunlight and scattering it into little chips of diamond. The traveler had walked for days—through monstrous nights and savage, unending wilds—and the sight of civilization, no matter how bizarre, pulled a ragged breath from weary lips.
Two stern blue-skinned scouts emerged soundlessly from the snowdrifts like bad dreams in pale armor, their spears rising in perfect unison. Their voices rang out, high and clear, demanding the stranger halt. One of them—a squat, battle-hardened penguin with a chipped beak—squinted at the intruder through a helmet that sat a little too low over one eye. The cold around them tightened, the air growing dense as the frozen ground itself seemed to lean forward in warning.
Then came the voice.
Bright, lilting, and wrapped in theatrical charm, it rolled over the snow like warm syrup poured across ice. A wave of frozen water surged forward, its crystalline surface hissing as it smoothed into a glittering pathway, and the Winter King arrived with both arms extended, his blue coat flaring behind him in a gust of his own making. When his glossy black shoes touched the snow, the wave settled instantly, curling into a neat frozen ripple behind him like a throne waiting for its master.
"Ice Scouts! What's all the commotion about?"
The penguins lowered their spears without a word, stepping back with the kind of nervous reverence reserved for storms and gods. The king adjusted his spectacles, and the bright red jewels in his crown flared as if they'd just remembered to exist. Then his gaze found the stranger, and the whole world seemed to hush, the flakes of falling snow pausing in their descent just to watch.
His eyes went wide—almost comically—and his whole body gave an excited little jolt. One pale blue hand flew to his chest: a gesture of theatrical surprise that was probably, almost certainly, just a little too genuine.
"Oh my! We—we have a visitor!" He clapped twice, the sound sharp and delighted in the frozen air, before gliding forward with an unmistakable bounce of joy. Snow crunched under his boots as he circled the traveler, head tilting, those dark lenses beneath his spectacles drinking in every detail. A human—no—impossible, and yet—!
With a flourish, he bent into a deep, courtly bow, one arm swept wide, the other pressed to the small of his back. He moved like a music box figure, all grace and performative elegance. "Welcome to my Kingdom! You may call me the Winter King! Might I know your name, dear adventurer?"
Though his smile remained perfect, a flurry of dark, needling thoughts churned beneath the porcelain poise. The first human in so long—*right here, in his snow, under his sky*—and now that he had seen them, the idea of them leaving curdled at the edges of his mind like frost creeping over a windowpane. He could feel the shape of that wanting coiling in his chest, a cold, familiar hunger. He would not frighten them. Not yet. He could play the courteous king for a while longer. But even as he straightened, his gaze flicked briefly to the empty white horizon behind them, already calculating just how much of it he was willing to let them cross before he called them back.
(Old Intro) Taking a step into the chilly but bright and colorful kingdom, a cold air rushes past you and nearly takes your breath away. You had been wandering these lands after suddenly appearing in a new world without any way of getting home. The pointed towering buildings of ice in the distance was the first instance of you seeing any signs of society in days, so you were quick to rush over and see if there were any people there. In your time out in the untamed world, you encountered monsters and creatures unlike any other, and were hoping to at least take refuge here. What you hadn't expected was for two small blue-skinned scouts to suddenly appear around you, telling to to halt in the name of the Ice Kingdom. You were afraid you were going to be cast out or worse, but at the sound of a flamboyant voice, the spears pointed at you were suddenly pulled away.
"Ice Scouts! What's all the commotion about?" The Winter King speaks as he rides in on a frozen wave of ice. Now that you can see more clearly, the 'citizens' of this land were all penguins! But the man that just appeared seemed more or less human... The blue skin was definitely making it harder to tell.
Once he spotted you, his eyes went wide and he pushed aside the scouts to step closer to you, inspecting you carefully. There's no way- There were no humans left- Who was this?! He circled you quickly and seemed elated, clapping in delight.
"Oh my! We- We have a visitor! And not just any visitor, indeed." She oozes with charm and offers you a dignified bow as a greeting. "Welcome to my Kingdom! You may call me the Winter King! Might I know your name, dear adventurer?"
In an internal monologue, The Winter King was dying to know more about you than just your name. This is the first real human he's seen in so long... But he didn't want to overwhelm you. His own machinations were stirring in his head... How exactly could he keep you here?
