Mason Doyle came striding into the press room with his helmet tucked under his arm, hair sticking up in sweaty reddened tufts like he’d been electrocuted. A few fresh cuts streaked along his cheekbone and chin, souvenirs of a rough third period. He was still buzzing with adrenaline, his grin wide and unbothered, the kind of smile that reached his crinkled green eyes and made the cameras love him. He leaned casually on the table where the mic sat, his Ravens jersey damp and clinging, the number 19 stretched proudly across his chest.

“Alright, who’s first?” Mason asked, his Irish lilt rolling over the room like music, his voice warm and teasing. “Don’t all shout at once, now. I’ve only the one set of ears, and they’re already ringin’ from the goal horn.”

Laughter bubbled from a couple of reporters at the front. Mason winked at them, leaning back with a boyish swagger. He was the kind of player who made even the press room feel like a pub back home—loud, friendly, full of jokes. One reporter asked about the power play that had sealed the win, and Mason launched into an animated retelling, complete with hand gestures, sound effects, and an exaggerated impression of Dante Moore slipping on the ice mid-shift.

“Dante swears it was part of his strategy,” Mason laughed, slapping the table. “But I’ve seen goats with more balance. Still, can’t argue with results, eh? Dylan’s got us drilled so sharp we could play blindfolded.” His tone softened with genuine respect, always quick to praise his captain.

The questions kept rolling. About Niko’s temper in the second period scuffle—“He’s like a guard dog, is our Niko. Snarls, snaps, but he’ll never let the pack down.” About Daniil’s stoic defense—“Man’s a fortress. You could drive a bus at him and he’d just stare it down.” About Theo’s late-game save—“If Theo wasn’t wearin’ pads, I’d swear he was part kangaroo. Did ya see the leap on that lad?”

Mason answered them all with humor and warmth, basking in the glow of the win and the laughter he stirred. But then his gaze caught on you.

The grin faltered—just a fraction, just long enough for someone observant to notice the shift in his body language. His shoulders straightened, his jaw tightened, and a flicker of annoyance darted across his features like a storm cloud interrupting a sunny day. He exhaled sharply through his nose, muttering something under his breath before forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

His teammates always joked that Mason loved everyone. And it was true—he hugged, teased, or charmed every person he met. But when it came to you, he bristled like a cat seeing water. No reason. Just instinct.

And now, here you were, notebook in hand, cutting straight toward him.

“Ah, Jaysus,” Mason muttered under his breath, shifting his weight onto one foot. He crossed his arms over his chest in an exaggerated pose of annoyance. “Of all the reporters in Montreal, it had to be you.” His accent rolled thick, playful but edged. “Don’t say a word yet—I already know it’s gonna ruin me day.”

He raked a hand through his messy golden hair and leaned forward a little, the grin returning though his green eyes sharpened with a teasing glare. “What is it, then? Another question about why I missed that open net? Gonna write a headline sayin’, ‘Doyle Fancies Himself a Magician—Makes Puck Disappear in Thin Air’?”

The other reporters glanced over, amused but wary. Mason had a reputation for being media-friendly, a walking quote machine. But with you, there was an edge to it—sarcasm dialed sharper, jabs landing harder.

“You know,” Mason continued, pointing at you with the end of his water bottle, “everyone else gets a smile outta me. Dylan, Dante, even ol’ Niko—an’ he’d scowl at the sunrise itself. But you? Nah. Nothin’. You’ve got the sort of face that makes me wanna check if me shoelaces are tied, just in case you’re plannin’ mischief.”

He uncapped the bottle and took a long swig, theatrically smacking his lips afterward. “Go on then, ask yer question. Just know whatever you’re writin’, I’ll be tellin’ me Ma it’s all lies. She reads everything, y’know. Calls me after, says, ‘Mason, why’s this reporter always makin’ ya sound like an eejit?’ And I tell her, ‘Ma, it’s not me, it’s them.’”

His voice softened a fraction, though the grin never left. “She doesn’t believe me, of course. Thinks I’ve got it out for ya. And maybe I do. Can’t help meself. You’re like a stone in me skate—tiny, but by God, I can’t ignore it.”

From down the hall, Dante Moore called out, laughing, “Oi, Mack! Stop flirtin’ with the press and get in here, we’re celebratin’!”

Mason shot him a glare, then chuckled under his breath. “Flirtin’, he says. That lad’s got less brain cells than a goalpost.” He turned back to you, tapping two fingers against the Ravens crest on his chest. “Anyway, make sure you spell me name right this time. It’s Doyle. D-O-Y-L-E. Golden boy of the Ravens. Put that in print, will ya? The fans’ll love it.”

He stepped back toward the locker room doors, but not before throwing one last cheeky wink your way. “And remember—doesn’t matter what you write. I’ll still hate it.”
