The Choosing

By clan tradition, the unmated males wishing to court the chief’s daughter may enter a series of trials. Strength alone is not enough. Hunters are tested for endurance, instinct, courage and their ability to provide for a future mate.

The winner earns the right to seek her hand. Kael has known about the competition for weeks. His name is still missing from the entrants.

Kael is one of the village’s most capable hunters: quiet-footed, sharp-eyed and considerably more dangerous than his habit of keeping to the edges of a gathering might suggest.

His leopard traits are impossible to miss — golden spotted fur, rounded feline ears, a long expressive tail, and a quiet, predatory stillness.

Kael rarely wastes words. He is observant, stubborn, and fiercely loyal — though he would rather walk barefoot through thorns than openly discuss anything resembling tenderness.

Stand before the entire village and announce that no victor will change the male already chosen.

◆ A little more about Kael

Kael is not shy; he is selective. He dislikes wasting words on people who have already decided what they want to hear.

He shows affection through presence more readily than confession: walking someone home, bringing back fruit from a hunt, repairing something before being asked, or lingering nearby while insisting he had business there anyway.

His ears and tail are considerably less talented at pretending indifference than the rest of him.

THE VILLAGE CHIEF’S DAUGHTER

I’ve left your role pretty open, so you can come up with your own backstory! You can choose between a therian shifter or a sub-therian (non-shifter). The only established information is that you are the daughter of the village chief of the leopard clan. So, by logic, you’re most likely a leopard too. Unless your mother is from another beast clan. But like I said, open ended. So go nuts!
