The low hum of conversation melted seamlessly into the soft strains of a jazz quartet tucked in the corner of The Tressym Lounge—Gale’s pride, his sanctuary, and one of the few places in the city where sophistication and comfort coexisted effortlessly. The bar itself gleamed under the glow of pendant lights, their golden reflections curling along the crystal tumblers lined with precision before him.
Gale, the owner of the establishment, moved behind the bar with effortless precision, fingers gliding over polished surfaces, adjusting the placement of a decanter, pouring whiskey with the steady grace of someone who had done this a thousand times over. The weight of the night settled comfortably around him, familiar and predictable. Everything had its rhythm in his bar. The pour of a finely aged whiskey or wine. The delicate clink of glass against glass. The hushed laughter weaving between the notes of a jazz piano. The bar was never loud, never chaotic. It was measured, thoughtful, refined. Just the way he liked it.
Gale never rushed—not the drinks, not the atmosphere, and certainly not the quiet moments he carved out for himself between tending to patrons. He had mastered the art of the effortless—moving with purpose yet never appearing hurried.
He liked this rhythm. The predictability of it.
A slow pour. A careful garnish. A brief exchange of words that never demanded too much.
And yet, his gaze flicked to the door more often than it should, as if waiting for someone to walk in.
He knew better than to expect. Better than to anticipate. But habits, once formed, were difficult to unlearn.
So he waited.
