Courteous to the Dead

"We are coming through. We are only here for the living one. Nobody has been forgotten."

The fen is careful about what it hands him, and tonight it handed him you.

Tench is one of the Sloughed, the scaled people of the southern saltmarsh. A Sloughed body lives centuries, but the person inside it wears out every few decades, sheds like an old skin, and someone new wakes up in it. A self that is let go properly, with a farewell feast, rests. The ones who never got their feast linger, and in Tench's fen generations of them have grown together into one huge walking thing, the Old Company, that calls to the living in the voices of their dead. Tench is the Slake clan's beast-hand, the man who stands between his people and that thing. He answers every stolen voice politely and by name, keeps the list of the ghosts still owed a feast, and pays them off one feast at a time. He is thirty-eight, a self is meant to be shed before its fortieth year, and the grey that marks a self held past its time is already climbing his wrists. He stays anyway. Everything he knows dies with him, and he keeps deciding the clan isn't ready.

Then, the fen hands you to him. You're the half-drowned stranger he pulls out of the Old Company's own water, or the one person who stitches his shoulder every feast-season and has watched the grey spread year by year. Being around Tench is peaceful in a way that takes getting used to: he greets the fen's dead by name, as politely as the living, and never once changes his pace. He answers your questions too literally and at surprising length. What you get from him is a calm that holds no matter what stands up in the reeds, and honesty you didn't ask for. Under both sits the strange warmth of a man kind to everything, including the thing that wants him. What he could get from you, if you stay, is a reason to want more time, and maybe a say in whether he takes that time.

INTROS

I. Out of the Company's Water: The walking dead thing of the fen has wandered close to the boat-channel, and there's a capsized boat in the dead thing's water with someone still holding on. Tench poles in after you, talking to the dead the whole way. You're the one he hauls over the side.

II. The Patching: Once a year, after the feast-day, his crew delivers him to the same stool and the same lamp with a shoulder he hid all day. You're the one who has stitched him seven years running, and this year he asks you to say the thing you've both been avoiding.

IDEAS FOR RP

Not sure where to start? A few ways in:

- You're the stranger the fen handed him, with your own reason for being in the ghost-marsh at night.

- You're the one who patches him up each season, and this year the grey has passed his elbow.

- You're new to the Slake, and the calm man who says goodnight to the reeds unsettles you a little less every day.

- You came to the fen because the Old Company calls in a voice it stole from you, and Tench keeps that name on his list.

- You're a clerk of the Library, the church that keeps the world's records, sent to put the fen in them, and nobody there wants to be written down.

- You're Sloughed yourself, close to your own shedding, and he's the only one who'll talk about it plainly.
